The #EU often presents itself as the global leader on #animalwelfare, but in most cases, its standards do not apply to #imports. And that’s a big problem, because #trade agreements can impact the price of imports. If low welfare products from abroad become cheaper to import, demand for those products can increase, and we may end up stimulating cruel animal production in third countries. Scroll through this carousel to learn more about where some of the most consumed products in the EU come from. From 30 April 2024, the UK government is introducing physical border checks on imported food and animal products from the EU for public health and animal welfare purposes. Post-Brexit, the UK government delayed the introduction of these inspections for EU imports, so physical sanitary or phytosanitary checks are currently only performed on animals and plants arriving from outside the EU. In our latest article, Meera Rajah provides more detail on post-Brexit border controls - click here to read our article in full 👉 https://lnkd.in/eVhxYimP #vat #postbrexit #government #eu #accountants #advisers #article #maximiseyourpotential

In our insight by Charlotte Flores we look at advocating for #animalwelfare and #food #safety standards in #postBrexit #trade deals. #UK's transition post-Brexit has brought about significant changes in agriculture trade and animal welfare standards. Amid concerns from stakeholders and public, government policy has yet to take decisive actions on risks associated with low-welfare imports of animal products. Our recent survey reflects a strong public sentiment, with 84% supporting restrictions on low-welfare imports - this support is consistent across political alignments. In this deep-dive insight, we explore the current state of trade deals, risks associated with these decisions - UK's status as one to uphold high animal welfare standards, food safety concerns for consumers, and implications for UK farmers. We also offer practical policy solutions, including mandatory #animal #welfare #labelling and higher #import #tariffs. #AnimalWelfare #FoodSafety #UKTrade #PostBrexit #PolicyChange 🌍🐾 https://lnkd.in/eQb2Sieq

The EU banned the trade in commercial seal products back in 2009 because inherently inhumane sealing practices were deemed to be an affront to public morality. However, right now, the legislation is being subjected to a ‘regulatory fitness check’. My latest OpEd points out that the European Commission needs reminding just why this hard-fought animal welfare legislation should be upheld. #seals #animalwelfare #eupolicy #climatechange #fur #animalprotection #trade #wildlife

The Polish 2023 parliamentary elections have turned the tide of political force in the country, as the coalition of opposition parties secured the majority in Parliament. What can this mean for animals? Since the size of agricultural production in Poland makes it an important player influencing European Union policies, the upcoming parliamentary term brings opportunities, as well as numerous challenges for animal welfare in Poland and beyond. Please support Australia farmers. Live sheep export is 80% West Australian, well regulated, has animal welfare approvals, on board vets, air conditioning and copious food and water. There is ZERO business or moral reason for the Federal Governments insane determination to close this successful business down. We have foolish members of parliament who cannot understand that a market worth 130 million is a big deal for thousands of West Australian communities and their farmers upon whom they depend. The economic knock on is significant and will cause years of damage to a business sector that already has to handle usual risks of market fluctuations for other produce and weather risk. Farmers SHOULD NOT have to deal with brain dead Governance (Sovereign) Risk This irrational government won less than 33% of the primary vote yet behaves like it has mandate. The arrogance and short sightedness is appalling. 7NEWS Australia Sky News Australia LinkedIn News The Canberra Times University of Canberra The Australian National University Please help https://lnkd.in/enNKZihg

For what could be the first time in Australian history, Parliament this week voted to destroy an industry that has served the country for almost 180 years.Live sheep exports from Australia – worth an average of almost $200 million a year over the past decade, supporting hundreds of farmers and thousands of jobs (primarily in Western Australia) – will end in 2028.One Nation voted against Labor’s legislation, but the usual suspects – the Greens, David Pocock, Jacqui Lambie and Tammie Tyrrell – supported it and signed the death notice for live sheep exports.Australia used to ride the sheep’s back. Wool was the nation’s first major export commodity, and the first shipment of live sheep left Western Australia all the way back in 1845. It’s part of our history and our heritage. In modern times, about 100 countries are involved in the live sheep export trade. Australia is the gold standard for animal welfare in the trade – sheep are much more likely to die in an Australian paddock than on a live export ship. The ban won’t stop the global industry, but it will inevitably lead to reduced animal welfare outcomes. 👆👆 I got this today. It's time to get those clowns out of the seat of power. They're destroying the nation. Maybe I should run for parliament after all.

Highly profitable, but comes with animal welfare concerns: The $1m PR and lobbying campaign to overturn livestock export ban. Campaign includes the development of new industry led welfare standards. Thoughts? Reputational risk for NZ, or all good?
