The National Basketball Association (NBA) stands as a beacon of global sports expansion, staging games in international markets and nurturing talent from diverse backgrounds. Similarly, the English Premier League (EPL) has captivated audiences across continents, with broadcasting rights reaching millions of households globally. Formula 1 was an early adopter of globalisation and shifted gears before most, racing in countries far beyond its European roots, while the National Football League (NFL) tackles new territories with regular-season games in England, Germany and Brazil next season. Commenting on sports events every week sometimes sparks some weird thoughts in my mind. Did you know that most sports are not more than 200 years old? Soccer was invented in 1863, Basket in 1891 and Rugby in 1823. And how do one sport becomes mainstream? A the end of the day a sport is just a set of rules so why couldn’t new sports emerge? I've always thought that one-on-one competitions could be created in almost any sport. Imagine how exciting a one-on-one matchup between the best NBA players would be at the All-Star Game. Establishment of autonomous sporting competitions that bypass the status quo of federations (this is already happening to some extent with EuroLeague, golf, and super leagues in football) could be a way to make sports more diverse and fun. I'm well aware that all of this sometimes goes against "tradition," but the same likely happened 200 years ago when traditional sports were invented, so why not?
