Despite having visited Glasgow many times and having worked in the city over the past 12 months, I had never visited Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum until today. It is a magnificent building housing an impressive collection of artwork, artefacts and natural history displays, with a Scottish and Glaswegian focus. Perhaps the most impressive exhibition for me was ‘Glasgow Stories’, illustrating nearly 1,000 years of history of this great city and focussing on four eras: Medieval, Georgian, Victorian and contemporary. The exhibition charts Glasgow’s expansion through trade, its engineering & manufacturing heyday, post-industrial decline and cultural rebirth as a modern centre for arts, entertainment, events and education. It was a reminder for me that cities are not static built environments: they are living ecosystems, constantly evolving, adapting and changing in response to the environment and situation around them - and in the UK there is perhaps nowhere else that has had to evolve and adapt as much as Glasgow has. Today, I was travelling through Dundee, and as recommended by Claire Enders CBE I visited the V&A Dundee museum, as pictured, the first ever dedicated design museum in Scotland, designed by renowned award-winning Japanese architects Kengo Kuma, it is stunning. Besides the V&A I am also interested in the proposed Eden Project for Dundee, which will be a landmark development for the city, transforming the former gasworks on East Dock Street into a beacon for regeneration and green tourism. It will encourage visitors to think, feel and act differently by revealing how we can learn from and be inspired by nature.  As I consider developing regional Anthropy consultation events in 2026, which will feed delegations and agenda content, potentially holding both at Eden’s Morecambe project and potentially Dundee, when developed, must warrant consideration. Clearly it needs to be something wanted by such towns, but having visited Dundee and seen its vibrancy, I would definitely be interested. As we have recently launched the Ampa - Legal & Professional Services & Anthropy vibrant places report, led by Sarah Walker-Smith, we recognise that investing in the built environment catalyses broader place and community vibrancy by enhancing infrastructure, public spaces, employability and pride of place. Such cultural investment, can foster community engagement, creativity, and economic growth. A well-planned environment inspires pride and participation, making places more dynamic and sustainable for future generations. I’ve always been a proponent of #adaptivereuse as a catalyst for sustainable city building in research and in practice. One of the best examples I’ve studied is the post industrial transformation in the cities of the Ruhr Valley in Germany. A few years ago my colleagues and I did a study tour there (factory converted to museum in photo). The lessons learned have been instrumental for framing thoughts on the potential of adaptive reuse in my practice. Conference paper Cities, Cultural Resilience and Place-based Heritage-The Museum’s Role-Defining Consideration Toward Urban Coherence The consideration approach for an overall impact for urban coherence, cultural facilitates such as museum requires a rigorous and comprehensive exploration and deliberation for of practice toward resilience and sustainability in the urban centers. In considering for a meaningful urban coherence and cultural fortification, the incorporation of ‘role-defining’ elements as available redefinition of pioneering role-marking to cultural facilities in urban center are assessed, hence the purpose of this study. The theoretical frameworks, including the adaptive practice and thinking may be helpful when considering place-based heritage for cultural facilities. We suggest that a collaborative thinking through the practical implementation could aid the role-defining impact of museums in the urban context. Given this, the analysis revealed that consideration to cultural amenities may be categorized as those: (1) the enhancement with cultural amenities in urban setting, whether in the interior or exterior environment, can aid in the regenerative role toward the restoration of the urban ecological landscape; (2) the museum’s role positioning should consider the nature, heritage and assets available to benefit the cultural; (3) ideas and practices pertaining to the systemic design consideration requires the socio-cultural, economic and regenerative dimensional; (4) the focuses is placed on the available strategies that include thinking toward an urban coherence. This MREJ Summit focuses on the present challenges and OPPORTUNITIES we face in transforming our downtowns into neighborhoods where live, work, play and stay all collide in a way that drives better outcomes for all stakeholders. It is happening today despite challenging economic conditions in real estate, but can be accelerated through leverage and partnership. Private, federal, state and local resources are all more closely aligning in this post pandemic effort and through partnerships and enhanced financing solutions we can bring our downtowns forward to better serve people today and our next generation. With new housing production slowing significantly the last 24 months and the way we use existing buildings often shifting significantly the time is NOW for this sustainable focused, tax base stabilizing/generating, job driving, and adaptive reuse(housing focused) effort.
