Rather than dedicating land to a single purpose, the future lies in solutions that integrate energy production, food security, nature conservation, and biodiversity. That's why we're thrilled to kick off the harvest season by gathering the first crops from the spaces between the solar panels in the #Agrivolt #AgriPV project at Flakkebjerg. Agri-PV via single axis trackers starts to tackle the ‘agriculture displacement’ argument that has emerged, while also providing the renewable energy and biodiversity enhancement….but like anything it’s in the ‘doing’ that the lessons lie, not just the ‘talking about it’ :-)

In many places around the world, land resources are scarce. To tackle the high demand for new green energy and promote the sustainable use of natural resources, we need a new, innovative approach to land use. Instead of designating a plot of land for one kind of use, the future points towards solutions that seek to synergize energy supply, food security, nature conservation, and biodiversity. Flakkebjerg Solar Park in Denmark is a joint project between European Energy, Aarhus University, Københavns Universitet - University of Copenhagen and Slagelse Kommune, and funded by Innovation Fund Denmark. Its purpose is to test solar power and crop growth in a shared space. This is what is called agri-PV or agrivoltaic, a combination of agricultural and photovoltaic tehnologies. Watch Johannes Ravn Jørgensen explain more about its first sowing season.

📣 Our project #INNO4CFIs promoting #innovation for #carbonfarming is kick-starting! 🧑💼 The consortium of 14 expert partners led by Fondazione E. Amaldi spanning 8 European countries gathered for the project start in #Rome, Italy in September. #INNO4CFIs, co-funded by the #EuropeanRegionalDevelopmentFund #I3instrument, is redefining #carbonfarming and #greentechnologies. With a focus on carbon farming initiatives and #reforestation, the aim is to increase #CO2 uptake while nurturing vital #environmental benefits like freshwater production, soil restoration, and biodiversity enhancement. 📈 Throughout the next 3 years, this ambitious project will develop a #CarbonFarmingTechnology platform for innovative nature-based solutions that support carbon removal practices and enhance #climateadaptation. 🌍 🤝 We are excited to blend innovation and expertise to pave the way for a greener, more prosperous future with our colleagues from Fondazione E. Amaldi, Planet srl, Space4Good, Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, F6S, AB Corporation, National Technical University of Athens, AINIA, Novobiom, 🌱 TREEO 🌱 Cooling the planet, #Rancho Stay tuned for updates! #sustainability #greentech #naturebasedsolutions #EUinnovation #ERDF #circulareconomy #climateaction #climatesolution #biodiversity #environment

With news last week that three new solar farms have been approved, there have been mixed reactions due to the environmental impacts this may have. However, a new academic partnership between EDF and Nature Positive is studying the ecological effects of solar farms on soil health, fauna, wildlife habitats and carbon flux under and adjacent to arrays🍃 . The experimental site will allow researchers to test different management regimes and compare areas of solar panels with undeveloped agricultural land, providing evidence on the potential for land under solar farms to generate net benefits for biodiversity, carbon and soil quality. With this work, “It is hoped the research will contribute to the collective understanding of how solar farms can be effectively managed to enhance biodiversity, influencing current best practice in the rapidly growing solar industry"👏. Do you believe solar farms are the way forward?

Wetlands cover only 6% of Earth’s land but support 40% of its wildlife! 🦋🌿 As the largest natural carbon sinks, these ecosystems are critical. Yet, they’re under threat—especially in Catalonia’s Ebre Delta, where wetlands and large-scale rice farming coexist. 🌾 Rice fields here rely on vast irrigation networks, but pesticides from farming are seeping into the water, damaging the environment and coastal aquaculture. 🌊 To combat this, IMPETUS partners are innovating with wetland cells filled with natural absorbents like biochar, sand, and rice husks, filtering out up to 60% of pollutants before they reach drainage canals! 🌱 This breakthrough could transform water management, safeguarding wetlands, biodiversity, and sustainable farming in the Ebre Delta. Learn more about how this could transform agricultural water management in our latest video! 💧🎥✨ #MissionClimateAdaptation #ClimateAction #Sustainability #Catalonia #Pollution #Wetlands Eurecat - Technology Centre | Athens University of Economics and Business | EYDAP | Berliner Wasserbetriebe | Institute for Renewable Energy – Eurac Research | Institute for Regional Development – Eurac Research | ESCI - European Science Communication Institute | GCF - Global Climate Forum e.V. | IUCN | Kompetenzzentrum Wasser Berlin | KWR Water Research Institute | Lobelia Earth | CIHEAM Chania | Hellenic Ministry of Environment and Energy | Mantis Beyond Innovation | Waterjade | Mountain Research Initiative (MRI) | Nelen & Schuurmans | National Technical University of Athens | Senatsverwaltung für Mobilität, Verkehr, Klimaschutz und Umwelt | Sustainable Development Solutions Network | Troms fylkeskommune | THETIS SPA | UiT- The Arctic University of Norway | Universitat Rovira i Virgili | Universitat de Girona | Water & Energy Intelligence BV | Zemgale Planning Region | CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency | Mission Implementation Platform for Adaptation to Climate Change (MIP4Adapt) | ARSINOE_EU | TransformAr | CLIMAAX | Pathways2Resilience | REGILIENCE | REACHOUT
