I've helped Prague with circularity for 4 years. Here are my top 10 lessons:
(you can apply this at any organization)
1. Stick to the data
- If you can't measure it, you can't manage it
2. Define priorities fast
- Focus on the biggest flows, not plastic straws
3. Create a vision
- ask: "What should [your area] look like in 2050"?
4. Define actions
- Organizations need goals and plans to get stuff done.
5. Get a top-down buy-in
- Leadership needs to be on board. Win with a solid business case.
6. Create a specialized department
- Exit the silo. Open a horizontal position to engage your key departments regularly.
7. Network, network, network
- Locally, nationally, and internationally. Lots of opportunities await.
8. Engage local stakeholders
- Hand over, delegate, partner up with businesses, academia and NGOs.
9. Procurement is the king tool
- Circular purchases create demand for circular business models.
10. Look for quick wins, plan for a long game
- Show results fast, but keep your eyes on the prize
