With Brazil's influential position in Latin America's financial sector and its presidency of the #G20, the event highlighted the nation's role as a key partner for the #UK and #Spain. Featuring discussions led by prominent figures like H.E. the Ambassador of Spain and H.E. the Ambassador of Brazil, the event explored business opportunities and multilateral relations among the three countries, particularly in finance, energy and infrastructure. Speaker Pedro Barreiro explained "the relationship between Brazil and Spain is growing, and we [(Transfer)Wise)] are expanding our presence in Mexico, a country that has even stronger ties with Spain." Daniel Feliu Vera from Santander UK, told the attendees that they "aim to secure a significant market share in major markets, which is pivotal to our strategy. Brazil, Spain, and the UK represent three substantial markets for us." "The Brazilian capital market is highly sophisticated, and last year, we ventured into ESG bonds in Brazil. ESG considerations are prominent on the agenda, with investors showing keen interest in the sectors initiatives," attested speaker Eduardo Puebla. Hazel Gulliver added, "We must think globally but act locally. Drawing from global experiences enables us to implement effective measures at the local level." What do SMEs need to succeed?   Last week, I attended SME Assembly, organised within the European SME Week in Bilbao, Spain. Impressive speeches and panels, focusing on the EU single market and challenges that the companies are facing, with a strong focus on sustainability.   One standout observation from the conference – the financing part was mainly handled from the perspective of grants and supports. While crucial in specific cases, I believe that fostering access to the capital markets is paramount for businesses. Diversifying the capital structure, embracing various financing schemes – be it public and private markets, loans, bonds, equity or their combination is the key for long-term business success.   We need working and integrated capital markets to help SMEs thrive. Integration not only on words, but with actual unification of the rules and ensuring technical alignment for cross-border investing and capital raising. After all, free movement of capital is one of the fundamental freedoms of the EU. We just need better execution of that. The conference provided an excellent venue for engaging discussion with policymakers and private sector representatives from across Europe.
