It’s a compromise, for sure, yet this is the first comprehensive piece of legislation that addresses some of the major profound challenges that platform work raises on fundamental rights of workers. Baskut Tuncak, UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and Hazardous Substances, observed that “the right of all workers to safe and healthy working conditions sadly remains far more a privilege than a universal human right.” Essential protections in business and human rights include safe work environments, fair remuneration, equal pay, collective bargaining rights, and safeguards against forced labour and trafficking.
