EMA reports 2024 results for veterinary medicines - 25 approvals of which most were novel vaccines (14), & 2 were based on new active substances. Perhaps a strong post-COVID trend towards prevention of disease. The world desperately needs new vaccines to help prevent avian influenza, not only in domestic birds, but also in wild avians & other wild species. In these cases we need novel, less invasive delivery methods - perhaps aerosols that can be delivered en masse by quiet drones over breeding sites?

EMA has published an overview of its key recommendations of 2024 regarding the authorisation and safety monitoring of veterinary medicines.  In 2024, EMA recommended 25 veterinary medicines for marketing authorisation – the highest ever number of recommendations in a year. Of these, two had a new active substance which had not previously been authorised in a veterinary medicine in the EU. 14 were vaccines, including seven that had been developed by means of a biotechnological process.

The Paul-Ehrlich-Institut is responsible for immunological veterinary medicinal products and immunotherapeutics in Germany. At their annual dialogue on 12 December 2024, the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut exchanged views with the Federal Association for Animal Health (Bundesverband für Tiergesundheit, BfT) on current regulatory developments in the field of veterinary medicinal products. The BfT represents the leading manufacturers of veterinary medicinal products and feed additives in Germany. Regulatory support for the development of immunological veterinary medicinal products and immunotherapeutics ensures the quality, safety, and efficacy of these veterinary medicines. The ongoing exchange between the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut as the competent higher federal authority and veterinary medicinal product manufacturers thus makes an important contribution to preserving the health of livestock and pets.
