Have you been to the beach lately? 🏖 You may have seen plastic bottles and other litter nestled in the sand or floating in the water. In Europe, 80% of marine litter is plastic, produced on land, which ends up in the sea. This is a major problem for our coastal and marine areas because: 🐬 48,000 species depend on healthy coastal ecosystems in Europe. 🐡 So does half of the EU population living less than 50km from the sea. That is why we support innovative research to prevent, reduce and remove marine litter and plastic waste for cleaner beaches, seas and oceans! “🐬 48,000 species depend on healthy coastal ecosystems in Europe. 🐡 So does half of the EU population living less than 50km from the sea. “ 🌊 The EU Mission "Restore our Ocean and Waters" aims to protect and restore the health of our ocean and waters by 2030 through research, innovation, citizen engagement, and blue investments. This mission is essential for achieving climate neutrality and restoring nature by treating the ocean and waters as one connected system. Key Components: 📌 Lighthouses: These are regional hubs in major sea/river basins: Atlantic-Arctic, Mediterranean Sea, Baltic-North Sea, and Danube-Black Sea. They pilot and demonstrate Mission activities across EU seas and river basins. 📌 Mission Charter: Member States, regions, and stakeholders are invited to endorse the Charter and pledge actions that will contribute to the Mission’s success. 📌 Mission Portal: The EU Mission Ocean and Waters’ online Portal is a one-stop shop for stakeholders. It offers: Progress tracking towards Mission goals Updates on actions across Mission Lighthouses Financial and investment opportunities Access to a library of innovative solutions Engagement through events and outreach 📌 Funding Opportunities: New calls under the Horizon Europe Work Programme 2023-2024 are now available. Topics include marine habitat protection, sustainable sediment management in the Danube, and addressing climate threats to marine biodiversity. Why This Mission? Climate change and human activities are significantly impacting our ocean and waters. The Mission aims to make a real difference by 2030, contributing to the broader goals of the European Green Deal. "The ironic thing is they still call us freshwater fish." This image perfectly captures the sad reality of our polluted waterways. Freshwater ecosystems, once teeming with life, are now drowning in plastic waste and other pollutants. It's a stark reminder that our actions have direct consequences on the environment and the species that inhabit it. We must act now to protect our rivers, lakes, and oceans from further degradation. Every small step—reducing plastic use, supporting clean-up initiatives, advocating for stricter regulations—can make a difference. Let’s commit to being part of the solution, not the problem. Our planet’s future depends on it. #SaveOurWaters #EnvironmentalAwareness #CleanWaterNow

Geographic and municipal conditions mean an estimated 20,000 tonnes of plastic currently flows through the Rio Motagua into the Caribbean Sea on an annual basis. Based on this number, this one river alone is responsible for an estimated 2% of global plastic emissions into the oceans.

Our oceans are drowning in plastic pollution, with devastating consequences for marine life. Mistaking plastic for food, many marine species consume plastic particles, which can lead to internal injuries, digestive blockages, and even death. But here's the thing: we can all play a role in protecting marine life by recycling more and reducing our plastic consumption. By recycling our plastic waste, we can help prevent it from ending up in the ocean and becoming a hazard to marine animals. So, let's take action today to safeguard our oceans and the incredible diversity of life they support. Together, we can protect our oceans and ensure that they remain vibrant and thriving. 🌊💙 #WastePlan #EarthDay #OceanConservation #ProtectOurOceans #SaveOurSeas
