  • The Joint Research Centre published a new study investigating the effects of social media use on the mental health of 15-year-olds in Hungary, Ireland, Slovenia and Spain.   The study highlights that there is a relation between time spent online and increase in the reporting of anxiety and depression. It also suggests that policy interventions should take into account the socio-demographic traits of users.    Future research should therefore focus on understanding the complex relationship between adolescent’s social media use and mental health, investigating the different factors that play a role.   Progressing in this study is crucial for putting in place policy actions that protect young people's well being and supporting their digital education. • Ukraine was hit by record-breaking wildfires in 2024, clearly related to Russia’s invasion.   Our new report on Forest Fires in Europe, Middle East and North Africa shows that in 2024 Ukraine had the worst fire season ever recorded in the EU Forest Fires Information System, with almost one million hectares burnt. Most major fires occurred in summer, along the line of the war front between Ukraine and Russia. The effects of the conflict appear to have been worse in 2024 than in previous fire seasons since the war started. The report also shows that 2024 was a devastating year for forest fires in Portugal, while in the rest of the EU fire impacts stayed average, thanks to rainfall during the summer.
