Tomorrow is the first international day for Intangible Cultural Heritage. UNESCO celebrates by hosting a webinar on Artificial Intelligence and Intangible Cultural Heritage. There is a lot of overlap in risks, benefits and policy-considerations between the creative industries (film, music, performing arts etc.) and intangible cultural heritage, as it relates to AI. This is because today's creative practice is often tomorrow's intangible cultural heritage. Ethical AI for the creative industries is Ethical AI for the heritage sector is Ethical AI for culture. Last week, I attended #Francotech, the first business and innovation event alongside the Summit of French-speaking countries, hosted at the iconic European incubator, STATION F in Paris. AI was a key focus, alongside other crucial conversations on energy transition, skilling, inclusion and much more. I left the event inspired by incredible leaders like Neila Benzina, whose entrepreneurial journey in the tech space is nothing short of humbling. I was also privileged to participate in a panel on AI, where we explored its potential and the stakes for French-speaking countries. My core message centered on three pillars where I believe we have an opportunity to collaborate and mutualize resources for a better impact: 📚 Skills: It's imperative to educate both leaders and employees about AI. We must debunk the myth that GenAI is just for "geeks." For the first time, this is a technology accessible through natural language and that can extend its power beyond developers to anyone willing to experiment and innovate. 🌍 Diversity in LLM Training: With most LLM training materials in English, there's a risk of GenAI reflecting Anglo-Saxon biases. To boost global adoption, LLMs must learn from the full spectrum of human diversity, going beyond mere translation. 🛡️ Inclusion and Accountability: GenAI presents both opportunities and challenges for inclusion. While ethic committees can establish guidelines, organizations must be held accountable for their GenAI outputs. AI & EU: time to empower innovators Countries can be leading in culture and sciences before they fall back for decades or even centuries. The Roman Empire is one of the many examples of human history that could see the rise and fall of nations. More recently, Japan’s nearly two-and-a-half centuries of isolationism de facto froze progress in the far eastern archipelago. Global competition and complex societal changes currently pressure Europe’s decision-makers to steer the continent toward competitiveness and innovation—at least on paper. Technologies in cities are not new. What is remarkable is the speed of technological development and the complexity of urban systems with embedded technologies. The advancements of the 20th century led to artificial intelligence in just 50 years, reshaping the way we live in cities. However, digital transformation also brings new issues that affect people's lives. This is why governance is important—not just governance, but good governance. A holistic governance that relies on ethical, moral, and social principles to ensure the well-being of citizens in cities. The lectures cover a wide range of topics and provide an in-depth examination of the impact of data, innovation, and technology on the urban environment. Important discussion in Brussels on AI and Sustainable Development - both on how AI can help and hinder reaching the SDGs in the coming years!

Today, our General Secretary, Inese Podgaiska, had an insightful first meeting with Olivia Rekman, Innovation Adviser in AI & Data and Nordic Scaleups at Nordic Innovation. For those who may not know, Nordic Innovation is an organisation under the Nordic Council of Ministers, dedicated to fostering innovation and collaboration across the Nordic countries. One of their notable initiatives is the Nordic Ethical AI and Data Ecosystem project, which aims to position the Nordic region as a leader in ethical artificial intelligence and responsible data use by 2030. Given our shared interests, ANE and Nordic Innovation are beginning to explore potential areas of collaboration. We hope to align our efforts to advocate for ethical practices in technology development and deployment, ensuring that innovations benefit society as a whole. We are optimistic that this initial meeting will pave the way for future joint projects focused on ethical AI, responsible data use, and the creation of safe technological environments.
