Skyline Drones 🚁, LA ORIZONT 🌐 & National Institute for Earth Physics (INFP) 🌍 carried out a complex aerial survey at a very important archaeological site in Romania, The Ancient City of Histria 🏛️. Being on the eastern border, we were confronted with a highly jammed GPS environment 📡. The best UAV's like Tundra 2 from HEXADRONE 🚁 and Trinity Pro from Quantum-Systems 🛰️ helped us a lot in that matter. We used some of the best aerial imaging equipment on the market, such as topographic LiDARs from YellowScan (VX20 & Ultra3) 📷, the 100Mpx iXM camera from Phase One 📸, Sony's 45Mpx integrated camera on the Trinity Pro and also Yellowscan Navigator Bathymetric LiDAR 📡. Unfortunately, the turbidity of the water was high 🌊 and the bathymetric LiDAR could not penetrate the depth. The area scanned was huge 🗺️ and so was the amount of data 💾. The team scanned the entire swamp where the ancient city is located to look for more archaeological structures 🏺 and to obtain an updated map of the area for further analysis 🖥️. 🌱 Unlocking the Secrets of Soil Health with UAV Technology! 🌱 In our study which we will present next week on the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS) we used Unoccupied Aerial Vehicles (#UAVs) for high-resolution mapping of Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) content—an essential indicator of #soilhealth and sustainable land management. Our study explored the explanatory power of UAV-derived spectral and topographical variables in estimating SOC content across three diverse agricultural parcels in Greece, featuring a vineyard, a kiwi orchard, and a peach orchard. 🔍 Key Findings: Significant variations in SOC content were observed, with the vineyard and kiwi orchard exhibiting higher values compared to the peach orchard. Our mixed models, integrating both topographical and spectral data, successfully explained 81% of the SOC content variation within the training dataset. Beyond crop type, additional topographical and spectral variables emerged as crucial predictors. 💡 Implications for Precision Agriculture: Our findings underscore the potential of UAV data coupled with advanced modeling techniques for precise SOC estimation at the parcel level. This advancement paves the way for enhanced soil health monitoring and more informed sustainable land management practices. 🚀 Future Directions: We advocate for further exploration into machine-learning approaches to refine and expand these capabilities, pushing the boundaries of precision agriculture even further.
