Many warming records were broken in 2023 along with climate disasters such as wildfires, cyclones, droughts, and floods. In this time, the focus of the public narrative – often with the participation of scientists – has often been on whether we crossed the ‘magical’ warming threshold of 1.5 degrees C. The best estimates, derived from data recorded by instruments, say the planet is just under this threshold. But did we really cross the 1.5 degreesC threshold in 2023?  

This is very disturbing indeed. It should also be noted that the science community has long faced accusations of overplaying the warming trend, although some in the science community have felt that the message was actually being softened, to not create a backlash. Unfortunately the most recent years suggest that the concern of a warming underestimation may have been warranted, although causes and attribution studies regarding must still be completed. Certainly two key takeaways are worth noting: 1) We are experiencing a period of warming beyond expectations. 2) Climate change skeptics were drastically wrong when they predicted "global cooling" after a supposed plateau in temperatures between 1997 and 2013. HUMANS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR GLOBAL WARMING Climate scientists have showed that humans are responsible for virtually all global heating over the last 200 years. Human activities like the ones mentioned above are causing greenhouse gases that are warming the world faster than at any time in at least the last two thousand years. The average temperature of the Earth’s surface is now about 1.1°C warmer than it was in the late 1800s (before the industrial revolution) and warmer than at any time in the last 100,000 years. The last decade (2011-2020) was the warmest on record, and each of the last four decades has been warmer than any previous decade since 1850. Many people think climate change mainly means warmer temperatures. But temperature rise is only the beginning of the story. Because the Earth is a system, where everything is connected, changes in one area can influence changes in all others. The consequences of climate change now include, among others, intense droughts, water scarcity, severe fires, rising sea levels, flooding, melting polar ice, catastrophic storms and declining biodiversity.Humans are responsible for global warming #snsinstitutions #snsdesignthinkers #designthinking

♨ 2024 keeps the global warming trends 🌡 In a startling update from the European climate agency Copernicus, Earth is dealing with the aftermath of its hottest year on record. The agency reported that in 2023, temperatures soared to 1.48 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial times, just short of the crucial 1.5-degree threshold outlined in the Paris Climate Accord. Alarmingly, January 2024 is on track to break new records, potentially marking the first time in history a 12-month period exceeds this critical limit. 📈 The rise in global temperatures has led to disastrous consequences worldwide. From deadly heatwaves in Europe and North America to devastating wildfires in Canada, the impact of climate change is evident. Copernicus points to the primary culprit: the increasing levels of greenhouse gases resulting from the burning of fossil fuels. While other contributing factors include El Nino, natural oscillations, increased solar activity, and a 2022 undersea volcano eruption, scientists assert that greenhouse gases remain the main driver behind the record-breaking warmth. 😷 With projections indicating that 2024 might surpass the temperatures witnessed in 2023, the global community faces a crucial moment in its efforts to combat the escalating climate crisis. Global temperatures this month, particularly in the oceans, are well above average for the time of year. The ongoing El Niño weather pattern — in which warm water pushes into the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean — is also entering its second year, a time when it typically supercharges global warming. These and other factors suggest that 2024 could see even more extreme weather and climate impacts than 2023, as humans continue to pour heat-trapping greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

The world has baked for 12 consecutive months in temperatures 1.5C (2.7F) greater than their average before the fossil fuel era, new data shows as reported by The Guardian in this article. Global Climate experts Carlo Buontempo, François Gemenne and Aditi Mukherji weigh in to speak on the impact of a warming world. Adding more on impacts, "We know that extreme events increase with every increment of global warming—and at 1.5C, we witnessed some of the hottest extremes this year.” Dr Mukherji said.
