From October 29-31, CGIAR FOCUS #ClimateSecurity, in partnership with African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (ACCORD) and the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment - Zambia, is convening a training workshop in Lusaka, Zambia to integrate climate, peace, and security into Zambia’s Green Growth Strategy. As climate challenges intensify, so do the stakes for food security, social cohesion, and community resilience in the country. This workshop will equip government officials to navigate climate-related social vulnerabilities, explore conflict-sensitive frameworks, and foster collaboration across ministries.

What are the key considerations for equitable, realistic adaptation indicators for Least Developed Countries? At the recent CGIAR Climate Impact Platform webinar on Tracking Global #Adaptation: Indicators and #LDC Priorities at #COP29, Dr. Luckson Zvobgo from the African Climate & Development Initiative highlighted that tracking local adaptation progress while maintaining global accountability is key to ensuring equitable outcomes for Least Developed Countries (LDCs). Dr. Zvobgo stressed that" We need to ensure that indicators that track progress, including Indigenous people's contributions to the adaptation work, are included and highlighted, and should at least utilize both best available science and also Indigenous local traditional knowledge." In the lead up to COP29, earlier this week the CGIAR MENA Regional Climate Security Hub hosted an exciting roundtable - “Integrating Climate, Peace, and Resilience into the COP29 Agenda.” Held in Cairo, Egypt, this event convened leaders from government, UN agencies, international NGOs, research institutions, and youth groups to address one pressing question: Has peace truly made its way into the MENA climate agenda? Some key takeaways included: ⏩ The need for clearer implementation pathways for peace-focused climate declarations from COP27 and COP28. ⏩ A call for a regional platform to shape a unified MENA stance on peace-positive climate adaptation. ⏩ A stronger focus on climate finance accessibility and youth leadership in climate security solutions. COP29 in Baku will continue the essential work of embedding peace in climate discussions. Stay tuned for more key messages that will shape ongoing efforts in the region.

Climate change poses an existential threat, especially for the world’s most vulnerable communities. As we approach #COP29, the conversation has evolved from defining an overarching adaptation goal to identifying global indicators that measure progress and ensure effective implementation. CGIAR Climate Impact Platform’s webinar #6 brought together four leading experts to discuss key considerations for developing global indicators that track adaptation progress, with a special focus on the needs of Least Developed Countries (LDCs). At the webinar, global expert Dr. Cristina Rumbaitis del Rio from the United Nations Foundation shared insights on the LDCs' expectations as they approach COP29 and how to elevate adaptation ambition and action through the GGA and COP-29 and beyond. Highlighting that "There’s a tremendous opportunity with national adaptation plans being developed globally, and the next nationally determined contributions are due in February 2025. These can both have strong adaptation components and set a national direction for adaptation efforts." Catch up on the full webinar here : https://lnkd.in/dDaWD72C

Excellent learnings were gained from yesterday's CGIAR Climate Impact Platform webinar #6 - Tracking Global #Adaptation: Indicators and #LDC Priorities at COP29. Dr. Timo Leiter from The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) discussed the ongoing work to develop adaptation indicators under the Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA). He emphasized: "Adaptation, of course, is very context-specific, and that is the very reason why there is no global universal set of adaptation indicators. And because adaptation is so diverse, we will never have a single list of, let's say, 10 global indicators. And the process we are in now also will not develop such a universal list." Moderated by Dr. Aditi Mukherji, the session explored a series of key considerations for identifying effective global indicators that track progress on adaptation and takes into account the needs of the Least Developed Countries.
