Some of the most dangerous phrases in architecture and design are "This is the way we've always done it", "We like what we have" or "We're not interested" or "We're too busy for this". You could argue that 12th Century Gothic architecture was some of the most beautiful in history, but what if the Sydney Opera House was never built, or the Empire State Building, or the Burj-Al-Arab, or The Shard. Imagine where modern architecture would be without the individuals that made those buildings a reality. Innovation requires change, and the willingness to change inspires creativity in process improvement, so why not start now? Frank Lloyd Wright change the phrase "From Follow Function" to "Form and Function area One" by using nature as the best example of its integration. The Famous FLW Organic Architecture base on reinterpretation of nature’s principles as they had been filtered through the intelligent minds of men and women who could then build forms which are more natural than nature itself. Organic Architecture involves a respect for the properties of the materials, and a respect for the harmonious relationship between the form/design and the function of the building. Organic architecture is also an attempt to integrate the spaces into a coherent whole: a marriage between the site and the structure and an union between the context and the structure. The Falling Water House designed by FLW is the best example of his Organic Architecture. This is one of the iconic buildings of modern architecture history, in my opinion. https://lnkd.in/gBrsKK2A

Italy produced some of the world’s most innovative and exciting Brutalist architecture, which is featured in a new book entiteld Brutalism in Italy: Concrete Architecture from the Alps to the Mediterranean Sea, with magnificent photographs by Roberto Conte and Stefano Perego (published by FUEL). Italian Brutalism — ranging from private homes to churches, cemeteries, and stadiums―across every region of the country is fully documented, demonstrating the pluralist approache to concrete architecture in Italy during the 70s. We learn that it was a way for architects to distance themselves from fascism, without rejecting the architectural modernism that had flourished during that era.

Do you know your period styles? Here's a surprising and challenging example! In the last post, I recommended a survey as part of an owner's fire strategy. She surveyed this house - Watlington House and its unique blend of architectural features from different styles. The house expresses classical elements and shares features with Ashdown House in Ashbury and Myton Hall in Yorkshire. However, what makes it truly intriguing is the evidence of stylistic blending, including Carolean elements. Mary has expressed her opinion as to why this stylistic blending was used, in her post this morning. The rich tapestry of influences, from the Tudor and Elizabethan periods to the Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian eras, has left an indelible mark on the country's built environment.
