"Creswell Revisited: Photos and Sketches of Aleppo City" Exhibition will add new photos of the same buildings, more description, the history of specific buildings depicted, along with exact locations. The original photos were taken by Creswell and the contemporary photos by Dr Zin Alabadin. The exhibition will not only include old and modern photos, but also a group of students from the Faculty of Architecture at Yildiz University have prepared architectural drawings of both sets of photos. The V&A’s Creswell collection of photos of Syria, and especially Aleppo, complement Dr. Zin Alabadin’s photos of the same views taken 100 years later. This exhibition aims to evaluate through comparison the destruction of cultural heritage. The importance lies in the introductory record for each building, featuring historical information, before and after photo documentation of the destruction and sketches. Finally, the extent of damage to the various buildings will be documented which in turn will assist in rebuilding the city later. One of the most important reasons for the selection of Aleppo city is to contribute to the limited number of resources for its study and to introduce the issue of its reconstruction after the war, topics which are not sufficiently covered in current academic studies. #YTÜ

Since antiquity, lead carbonate has been an invaluable pigment, used in easel paintings and buildings alike. In the late 20th century, all this changed due to international and national regulations. In my new article for Studies in Conservation, I've investigated this change. The article gives an overview of regulations with a focus on four European case studies (UK, France, Austria and Germany). It looks at both paintings and buildings, conservation and creative practice, and the consequence of bans for those different disciplines. Burg Kreuzenstein is a fascinating example of historical preservation and architectural revival. Its origins in the 12th century set the stage for a long history of strategic importance and architectural evolution. The castle's position, 265 meters above sea level, would have given it a commanding view over the surrounding area, making it a significant stronghold in its time. The destruction of the original structure during the Thirty Years' War, a devastating conflict that ravaged much of Europe from 1618 to 1648, marked the end of an era for the original medieval castle. However, the story of Burg Kreuzenstein takes a remarkable turn in the 19th century, showcasing the period's interest in medieval history and architecture. The reconstruction by Count Nepomuk Wilczek in the 19th century was driven by a romantic fascination with the Middle Ages, common among the European aristocracy at the time. Utilizing his wealth from Silesian coal mines, Count Wilczek embarked on a project not just to rebuild the castle but to recreate a medieval fortress as accurately as possible. This effort included collecting architectural elements, artifacts, and materials from various medieval locations across Europe to ensure authenticity. Today, Burg Kreuzenstein stands as a testament to this historical enthusiasm and provides visitors with a vivid, albeit somewhat idealized, glimpse into the medieval past. Its reconstruction is a part of the larger 19th-century trend of historicism, where architectural projects sought to revive and celebrate styles from different eras, particularly the Middle Ages. As such, Burg Kreuzenstein is not just a piece of architectural heritage but also a cultural artifact reflecting the historical revivalism of its era.
