Over the past few years, #highereducation #practitioners have noticed differences in how today’s #students learn compared to their peers, some disparities directly attributed to the #pandemic and others a symptom of isolation and #onlinelearning. Rather than asking students to catch up and mold to #highered’s traditional structures, experts in the field are asking, are #colleges set up to help students succeed? Instead of placing responsibility on students, colleges and #universities can model #institutionalreadiness through: ✳️ Making implicit assumptions explicit. ✳️ Modeling a #growthmindset. ✳️ Supporting #facultydevelopment. Too often, higher education institutions focus on bringing diverse students to campus but neglect to provide the holistic support they need to succeed. As this Diverse: Issues In Higher Education article states, ‘students from diverse backgrounds are not just seeking a college degree—they are seeking a sense of belonging.’ To truly support our students, we need to ensure they are affirmed in their identities and equipped for success, both in and out of the classroom. https://lnkd.in/gj4h7hzk #highered #highereducation #edtech #studentsuccess #collegelife #diversityandinclusion #equityineducation #inclusiveeducation #educationforall #studentretention #onlinelearning #digitalcommunities #firstgenstudents #senseofbelonging #studentengagement #educationleadership #higheredleaders #academicleadership #InScribecommunities #InScribeApp #communitybuilding

This powerful insight from David Monaghan’s research on free college programs underscores a crucial point: simply making college free isn’t enough. While free college programs have the potential to change lives, the structure and follow through is just as, if not more, important. A well-designed program can open doors, while a poorly structured one may inadvertently close them. How can we better design these programs to ensure they reach and benefit all intended students? The transfer process from community colleges to four-year institutions is fraught with challenges that often derail students’ dreams of earning a bachelor’s degree. Only 16% of students who start at a community college achieve this goal within six years, and the rates are even lower for low-income and minority students. As Aurely Garcia Tulloch and Tatiana Velasco Rodriguez from the Community College Research Center highlight, institutions that prioritize comprehensive, compassionate advising and create seamless transfer pathways are seeing better outcomes. The loss of credits during transfer and the lack of adequate support at four-year institutions are major barriers that must be addressed. It’s time for a new approach—one that includes comprehensive advising, stronger institutional collaboration, and a commitment to equity and inclusion in every step of the transfer process. We owe it to these students to ensure their educational journeys don’t end prematurely. https://lnkd.in/gaWJr2uT Inside Higher Ed #highered #edtech #studentsuccess #collegesuccess #studentequity #educationforall #accesstoeducation #equityineducation #communitycollege #transferstudents #transferpathways #transfersuccess #edreform #higheredleadership #highereducation #eduleadership #edpolicy

Dual enrollment holds the power to transform educational pathways for underrepresented students, opening doors to college earlier and paving the way for long-term success. But to unlock its full potential, colleges must lean on data. By analyzing enrollment trends, completion rates, and student outcomes, institutions can identify gaps in access and success, particularly for underserved populations. Data can reveal which students are benefiting most from dual enrollment and where additional support is needed to close equity gaps. This recent article from CC Daily highlights what underrepresented students are looking for in dual enrollment programs—and how to ensure these opportunities lead to real student success. https://lnkd.in/gR3Eddvd #DualEnrollment #StudentSuccess #Equity #CommunityCollege #Comm_college #HigherEducation #HigherEd #CommunityColleges

Our partners are doing great work making the case for high school students’ equitable access to postsecondary – both college AND career -- advising and the systemic approaches that we need to make it happen. In a new article, Janice Bloom explains that: “Doing this requires a whole school effort to build what we call “postsecondary access infrastructure” – school structures to ensure that every student has multiple exposures to a variety of postsecondary paths, that they receive personalized, expert, and culturally competent counseling and support with their exploration and application." https://lnkd.in/ekbcd8fB

“…high schools were not designed to prepare young people for the transition to postsecondary education and a successful career. For example: Counselors are not funded and staffed at levels that make individual postsecondary support possible. Only a fifth of school leaders say they have specific curricula on career exploration and planning. Less than half of school leaders have access to data on FAFSA and postsecondary application rates” Neither principals nor teachers are required to learn about postsecondary processes during their certification programs.

--30% of college students today are over age 25. Are you creating meaningful programming for them? --More than a third of today's college students are part-time. How do you make them feel part of your community? --Nearly one in five college students has dependent children. What supports do you have in place for students who are also caretakers of children, parents, or other family members? The days of the 18 year old legacy freshman are long gone. Whether you are a virtual campus like mine, or a traditional bricks & mortar one, we need to adapt to the changing needs of our students and meet them where they are.
To better serve today’s students, postsecondary institutions must acknowledge their lived experiences and the multiple responsibilities their students carry outside the classroom. One size doesn’t fit all in higher education.
