Why is work life balance so important?
Regular overtime is one of the main reasons people call me week to week looking for a new job role. Work-life balance is crucial for maintaining overall well-being, productivity, and satisfaction in both personal and professional spheres.
𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐖𝐞𝐥𝐥-𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠: Striking a balance between work and personal life is vital for physical and mental health. Chronic stress resulting from long working hours, constant connectivity, and neglect of personal needs can lead to burnout, anxiety, depression, and various health issues.
𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲: Contrary to common belief, overworking doesn't necessarily lead to higher productivity. Continuous work without breaks can result in fatigue, decreased concentration, and reduced efficiency. By allowing time for rest and rejuvenation, individuals can return to work with renewed energy and focus, leading to better performance and productivity.
𝐄𝐧𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐉𝐨𝐛 𝐒𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Employees who have a good work-life balance are more likely to feel satisfied with their jobs. When individuals have time for personal interests, hobbies, and relationships outside of work, they feel more fulfilled and happier overall.
𝐑𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐁𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫: Employees experiencing burnout are more likely to seek alternative employment opportunities or suffer from absenteeism, ultimately impacting organizational productivity and morale. Prioritizing work-life balance can mitigate burnout risk and reduce turnover rates.
𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐎𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢s𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞: Organisations that promote and support work-life balance tend to have a more positive and inclusive culture. When employees feel valued and supported in managing their personal and professional lives, they are more likely to be loyal to their company.
𝐀𝐭𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐭: In today's competitive job market, work-life balance is increasingly becoming a priority for job seekers. Studios that prioritize work-life balance are better positioned to retain their employees, reducing recruitment and training costs associated with high turnover rates.

I cannot recall an Ask Susan article that I enjoyed writing as much as this one. I think the data is clear and more organizations need a nudge to move along with the suggested ideas. It is clearly beneficial to EVERYONE. If you read this and decide to act, we would love to hear about your experience!
