When is the right time to hire your first MLOps Engineer? Why paying attention to detail is such an easy yet an important skill - all you have to do is care ! I recently started hiring for MLOps/DevOps engineers - and added a "prompt injection" to detect LLM responses. 2-3% of the responses were flagged and rejected immediately. Copy paste gone horribly wrong Mind you - it was only 5 questions, and this was the only open-ended+optional one. Who said hiring can't be exciting? Have a hunch that hiring for tech will start to pick again, as AI wave is subsiding with more realistic expectations. While hiring might come back to pre-covid normal levels, competition for same has increased multi-fold. If you’re graduating or planning to prepare for your next switch- make it a point to dive deep and be hands on with things. As competition increases and everyone is leetcoding, nuances of Low level design, System Design and knowledge of development will take a front seat alongside problem solving, in hiring. It is as rare to find passionate, driven engineers with high degree of ownership and learning aptitude, as it has ever been. Best is to be one.

The secret to "AI / ML RAG / search / etc...?" - hiring *JUNIOR* not *SENIOR*. Hear me out Everyone wants to hire only ML superstars right now. But when you stack a team of superstars, you sacrifice long term culture and team growth for near-term results. The superstars want to move onto the next cool thing after the hard problem is solved. Yes the juniors need more coaching, but they're extremely enthusiastic about the space, bring fresh ideas, can do the day-in-day-out work, and can sometimes be more innovative/experimental than those biased by our experience. I know the economy has flipped a lot of incentives. But the teams that truly have long term growth trajectories have a healthy blend of senior / junior, and a healthy amount of new ideas/perspectives, and think about the long term, not just the next-cool-demo All to say I have heard from A LOT of new grads on the market, and you should meet some of them. They're bright and eager to have an impact.

We live in strange times. A few months ago NVIDIA's CEO gave a speech announcing that he believes AI will negate the need for us to learn to code.
