Financial Literacy has never been more important than before, and the unfortunate reality is that many public school curriculums do not currently provide the roadmap for students to be financially responsible by the time they turn 18. I’m looking forward to partnering with Motivate Our Minds beginning later this month by offering weekly financial literacy to students ranging K-5. Planting the seeds of financial success early in development will set these kids up for success! https://lnkd.in/eZCTW-nf

➡ ATTENTION: For Leon, Madison and Jefferson counties: https://lnkd.in/gVP4Usts We talk about investing for the future. Oct 22-24 gives you that chance by volunteering 30 minutes of your time, reading to children 0-3 years old from at-risk families we serve in the Big Bend. Did you know that by age three, a child's brain is twice as active as an adults and 85% of the development is in place? That matters to businesses because without sufficient literacy skills we lose so much talent - 16% of America's high school graduates read below a 5th grade level. Shared reading is an excellent way to help build the basis of literacy. While a 3 year old may not verbalize their reaction, a person from outside their classroom, taking time to read to them is exciting! Excitement leads to curiosity and imagination - meanwhile those very active brains make connections about the importance of reading. Imagine a couple of decades from now that one of the children in your group has become a key employee - and takes the afternoon to volunteer for a similar event. That's why your 30 minutes of reading can make a difference for a lifetime. These children have so much potential, and with a strong foundation of literacy, more doors of opportunity will open in their future. Reserve your session now! https://lnkd.in/gVP4Usts

This is an excellent article about embracing the science of reading in adult education. It gives a look into the reality of the underfunded and overlooked adult literacy world. "If the numbers of children currently reading below grade level are correct, we are heading into an even worse adult literacy crisis than we have now. The rallying cry for effective instruction methods for children is loud and clear. But it is time to sound the bell for the refugees of the broken reading education system as well: all those children who didn’t learn and are now adults, still not reading." Literacy Source classes provide explicit alphabetics (phonics and phonemics) instruction to our adult emergent readers. We see this need and are proud of what we do to help stop the adult literacy crisis. Why the Adult Education World Is Overdue In Embracing the Science of Reading – The 74 (the74million.org)
