Introducing our featured pledger of the month, Alex Bond! 🌟🎓 During his PhD in Chemical Biology of Health and Disease, Alex delved into the intricate world of cell membranes, exploring how alterations in their composition could impact cellular behaviour. But Alex's time at Imperial extended far beyond academia. Utilising all corners of Imperial’s vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem, Alex embarked on a transformative journey with Fresh Check: Confirming Hygiene, a startup aimed at revolutionising hygiene verification systems. From participating in the Venture Catalyst Challenge and the Greenhouse Accelerator, to developing the prototype at the Imperial College Advanced Hackspace and scaling the business in the Imperial White City Incubator. Reflecting on his time at Imperial, Alex fondly remembers the camaraderie of his peers, the supportive guidance of mentors, and the thrill of winning competitions like the CDT Den. Yet, it was the invaluable lessons learned from setbacks and challenges, such as navigating the uncertainties of the pandemic, that truly shaped his entrepreneurial resilience and determination. As CEO of FreshCheck, Alex continues to lead with passion and purpose, driving forward the mission to make contamination visible and safeguard public health. His vision for the future encompasses a range of innovative tools aimed at enhancing hygiene practices and mitigating health risks on a global scale. 💡 What do you care about so much you are ready to hustle for? One of the questions I have asked Master Students at the University of Amsterdam - Amsterdam Business School at Social Entrepreneurship track. Social and impact entrepreneurship is so hard - and so rewarding at the same time. ➡️ You are trying to solve the real issues, which should be taken care of by the government. ➡️ Many times your solution is relatively easy, which makes it not 'sexy and innovative'. ➡️ You are navigating systemic issues (poverty, unequal access to education, chronic disease) and you need to accept you cannot fix them all (even tho I would really like to do so). 🔥 That is why social entrepreneurs need to so deeply connect with their inner fire to change the status quo. 🛤️ The passions and hopes for the future and our inner compass. For me the the healing power of food, soil, and community are the forces of energy that keep me going despite the bumps in the road. Bold Plans (and Definite Optimism). Definite Optimism.   To a definite optimist, the future will be better than the present if he plans and works to make it better.   From the 17th century through the 1950s and ’60s, definite optimists led the Western world.   Scientists, engineers, doctors, and businessmen made the world richer, healthier, and more long-lived than previously imaginable. … Bold Plans.   Bold plans were not reserved just for political leaders or government scientists.   In the late 1940s, a Californian named John Reber set out to reinvent the physical geography of the whole San Francisco Bay Area.   Reber was a schoolteacher, an amateur theater producer, and a self-taught engineer.   Undaunted by his lack of credentials, he publicly proposed to build two huge dams in the Bay, construct massive freshwater lakes for drinking water and irrigation, and reclaim 20,000 acres of land for development.   Even though he had no personal authority, people took the Reber Plan seriously.   It was endorsed by newspaper editorial boards across California.   The U.S. Congress held hearings on its feasibility.   The Army Corps of Engineers even constructed a 1.5-acre scale model of the Bay in a cavernous Sausalito warehouse to simulate it.   These tests revealed technical shortcomings, so the plan wasn’t executed.   But would anybody today take such a vision seriously in the first place?   In the 1950s, people welcomed big plans and asked whether they would work. ― Zero to One, Peter Thiel. 👇 'When a risk taker writes a book, read it. Before coming to The University of Edinburgh for my PhD, I would've said that entrepreneurship and doctoral research had little in common, if related at all. Over the past three months I have realized just how wrong I was. Since January, my Thursday evenings (and lots of free-time) have been spent learning the basics of business/start-up development and discovering both the joys and challenges of entrepreneurship. It's been such a hard, but rewarding, process, just like a PhD, filled with exciting challenges to overcome and lessons to be learned. I've met the absolute best people along the way. I want to express my deepest thanks to Christina Starko and Richard Palmer for this amazing experience with the Edinburgh Innovations PhD MAX Program, and for the support along the way as I developed into a better scientist, aspiring entrepreneur, and person. I cannot wait to see where this new journey takes me in my PhD, what new things I'll learn, and the amazing people that I'll meet along the way. For now, it's back to the PhD, comet, and planetary defense research, but with a fresh new perspective full of different exciting opportunities. A special highlight was the PhD Student Discussion on "How Reversing the Arrow Will Shape Our Future Research." The session delved into: ‣ 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩: Exploring how different institutional setups impact and are impacted by entrepreneurship. ‣ 𝐑𝐡𝐞𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐜 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞: Examining the various ways to capture and study entrepreneurial effects through discursive approaches. ‣ 𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈𝐧𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲: Discussing the role of social innovation in addressing or exacerbating social inequalities. 🌟 New Upcoming Event! 🌟 We're very much looking forward to our participation in the 20th anniversary of the Annual Social Entrepreneurship Conference, hosted at IMD on April 19th and 20th! Over the past 19 years, this event has brought together scholars, practitioners, and students passionate about social enterprise, innovation, and sustainability, fostering a community dedicated to supporting social entrepreneurs and their organizations. This year, GREC will contribute to the conference with two paper presentations: "Community Entrepreneurship: A Strategic Process for Civic Wealth Creation" by Christina Hertel and Rossella Rocchino from TUM School of Management "Analyzing walk-talk inconsistencies under sustainability certification." — a collaborative project of four Geneva School of Economics and Management - UNIGE scholars: Rebecca Elliott Carballo, Lucía Gómez Teijeiro, Christina Hertel, and Giuseppe Ugazio Additionally, together with Domenico Dentoni and Steffen Farny, Christina Hertel will moderate a panel exploring the complex relationship between social cohesion, community resilience, and entrepreneurship. This discussion aims to illuminate the challenges and opportunities in fostering social dynamics within communities during crises. We are very curious to learn from two inspiring and experienced scholars on this topic: Sophie Bacq, and Stephanie Koornneef.
