1. **Neuralink's Second Trial Success**: Elon Musk's company Neuralink reported that its second trial implant is functioning well in a paralyzed patient named Alex. 2. **No Thread Retraction Issues**: Unlike the first patient, Noland Arbaugh, who experienced "thread retraction" post-surgery, Alex did not face this problem, allowing better electrode performance. 3. **Measures Implemented**: Neuralink has taken steps to prevent thread retraction by reducing brain motion during surgery and minimizing the gap between the implant and brain surface. 4. **Device Purpose**: The device aims to help individuals with spinal cord injuries regain control of digital devices through thought. 5. **Patient Progress**: The first patient has successfully used the device for activities such as playing video games, browsing the internet, and posting on social media. 6. **Current Usage**: The second patient, Alex, has also utilized the device for gaming and learning 3D object design.

While not elbow deep in the flesh, blood, rubber and metal of surgical robotics, engineering researchers at the University of Florida are playing a key role in advancing safety and precision in robot-assisted surgery, or RAS. Professor and chair for academics for ECE Florida Christophe Bobda, Ph.D., and Ph.D. student Antonio Hendricks are analyzing vast datasets from robot-assisted procedures, processing them using artificial intelligence and finding patterns and processes that can be improved. “We’re analyzing vast sums of data recorded by the robotic surgical system, such as stereoscopic video and kinematic data, via machine learning,” Hendricks said. “These processes are used to conduct autonomous surgical skill assessments and provide insights into interactions with respect to tissue handling and the final product." Neurological Implants: Companies will give "brain trust" a new meaning. Neuralink announces first human brain implant recipient. https://lnkd.in/g3GB87g6 According to Pitchbook, Neurotechnology (including technologies such as neuromodulation, spinal implants, neuroimaging/characterization) companies raised $1.4B across 115 deals in 2023. The 10 largest invested companies have over $2.0B in aggregate and have nearly 800 patents among them. In my view, *Intellectual* property will be a key component of driving these companies value. Combining the imaging, external sensor and internal sensor technologies will be key.
