Here’s how he did it: He chose four project teams with stable team compositions and stable processes to run the 90-day experiment. 🔺 Software engineers were given ChatGPT (with GPT4 Turbo) and GitHub Co-pilot 🔺 Specialists who do not code, like product owners and scrum masters, were only given ChatGPT Here is an example of how we tracked the metrics end-to-end ⤵️ 💡 Overall, the teams managed to increase output by 18% over a period of six two-week sprints. In a recent experiment led by our Chief Delivery Officer, Alexey Girzhadovich, we set out to measure GenAI's true impact on software development productivity at Exadel. This is how we conducted the experiment: We selected four project teams with stable compositions and processes to participate in a 90-day experiment. ▸ Software engineers were equipped with ChatGPT (using GPT-4 Turbo) and GitHub Copilot. ▸ Non-coding specialists, such as product owners and scrum masters, were provided with ChatGPT. As a result, the teams saw an 18% increase in output over six two-week sprints, evidenced by resolving 181 additional issues during this period. AI-augumented software development might be a "next big thing" and make writing code faster. However, this alone won't make software engineering faster if your testing and release processes alow for monthly releases only (or worse!). Different surveys show different values, but on average it appears that developers spend 2 hours per day coding. This is the only area for improvement for LLMs. The rest of the time they spend on manual procedures, manual testing, meetings, ceremonies etc. If you improve coding only, developers will just create more code waiting for release. #Agile #AI #LLM #Copilot #SoftwareEngineering (Image AI-generated, opinions mine)
