"I joined Nalam & Associates in 2021, without fully understanding what a Company Secretary (CS) does, as most people are more familiar with the role of a Chartered Accountant. However, after joining, I learned a great deal about the profession. I gained hands-on experience working on the MCA portal, learning how companies are incorporated, the sections that apply to companies, and the various compliance requirements after a company is established. I also learned how to handle GST registrations and filings, updating data, managing invoices, sales, and purchases, and billing processes. Additionally, I learned to file Income Tax Returns (ITR), which I found to be both useful and interesting as it involved understanding the regulations and completing the filing process. During my time there, I quickly absorbed a lot of new information, driven by my strong interest in learning new things. I’m not someone who likes to do the same task repeatedly; I believe that the more skills and knowledge you acquire, the better it is for your growth. While I was a trainee, I handled my tasks with dedication and honesty for two years, after which I was awarded a certificate, which made me very proud. One of the key things I learned during this time is how to find solutions to any query—whether related to company matters, GST, or anything else—by researching through Google or other sources. This skill has stayed with me, and I continue to apply it in my work today. I am committed to handling all tasks efficiently and am also exploring opportunities as a freelancer."

In the last few days, I’ve heard multiple cases from students expressing dissatisfaction with the tasks they are performing in firms. Many joined a firm with the expectation of working in the #Audit or #Tax departments, only to find themselves in bookkeeping roles. While a few months in bookkeeping may be acceptable, spending 3.5 years in such a position is not justifiable. I recently learned about a trainee assigned to the #receipt_room, where they had to monitor the loading and unloading of trucks in a factory—labour-intensive work that is completely unjustified for a CA finalist. This trainee faced a travel time of almost 2 hours on a bike, with no travel allowance, food, tea or even a chair to sit on, spending the entire day watching trucks. Ideally, firms should hire other suitable candidates for these roles instead of exploiting CA or other professional students. When these concerns were raised with senior management, the common response was, “You should have considered this before joining; now we can’t do anything. You have to do what is assigned to you or find other opportunities.” This highlights a significant communication gap and undue influence over trainee mental and physical health. Firms must specify in their induction advertisements which departments they are hiring for. It’s also crucial that firms check whether trainees are willing to perform such tasks and communicate in advance that they may be assigned to clients with receipt room or related assignments. Transparency is essential to ensure that trainees have realistic expectations and can engage in meaningful work that aligns with their career goals.
