Today’s DEI Daily Moment is on International Day of the Girl. On December 19, 2011, the United Nations General Assembly declared October 11 as the International Day of the Girl, to recognize girls' rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world. Girls have the right to a safe, educated, and healthy life, not only during these critical formative years, but also as they mature into women, the UN said “If effectively supported during the adolescent years, girls have the potential to change the world – both as the empowered girls of today and as tomorrow’s workers, mothers, entrepreneurs, mentors, household heads, and political leaders." An investment in realising the power of adolescent girls upholds their rights today and promises a more equitable and prosperous future, one in which half of humanity is an equal partner in solving the problems of climate change, political conflict, economic growth, disease prevention, and global sustainability, the UN said. The theme of International Day of the Girl 2023 is “Invest in Girls' Rights: Our Leadership, Our Well-being”. Adolescent girls have the right to a safe, educated, and healthy life, not only during these critical formative years, but also as they mature into women. If effectively supported during the adolescent years, girls have the potential to change the world — both as the empowered girls of today and as tomorrow’s workers, mothers, entrepreneurs, mentors, household heads, and political leaders. Today’s more than 1.1 billion girls are poised to take on the future. Our Research and Outreach representative, Frohar Poya, attended the Crans Montana Forum 36th Annual Session. She intervened in the session titled "Women, Democracy, and Social Cohesion: The Role of Women in the Implementation of Societal Values and Promotion of a National Dialogue," which was attended by the First Lady of the Union of Comoros, Mrs. Azali Ambari, the First Lady of Sierra Leone, Mrs. Fatima Mada Bio, and ministers and high-level officials from African states. 🔍 The session focused on three topics: •   Women are an essential element of our future and the flourishing of our societies. •   They represent key players in democracy and social cohesion. •   Girls' education is a determining factor in societal structuring and social balance. 🗣 Frohar Poya briefly presented the European Network of Migrant Women and shared her thoughts on the three discussed topics, saying that social cohesion, political and civic participation, and girls' access to education are possible when male violence against women is addressed at both social and institutional levels. ENoMW focuses on combating male violence, including trafficking and prostitution, to ensure women can fully participate in society. Ensuring women’s rights and safeguarding their spaces is crucial, and there is a need to question if men are as committed to true inclusion.

It is International Girl Child Day, and I’ve not just been thinking about the young girls who aspire to break barriers today but also on my younger self, (yes that gawky wee lassy in the pic!) completely unaware of the opportunities and challenges ahead. As a young girl, the world of fundraising and the third sector were completely alien to me. I never even knew a career in this sector was possible. Today, I see that gap in awareness as a significant missed opportunity—not just for me but for many girls who can contribute so much more if only they knew how. Understanding that there are fulfilling careers in social good, where you can make a tangible impact, can be a game-changer for many girls. We owe it to them to expand their horizons beyond traditional roles, giving them as many opportunities as possible. Scotland's third sector has a pivotal part to play in this, not just as organisations doing amazing work, but as ambassadors of change and awareness. We can take active steps to engage with educational institutions to introduce the concept of social good early on, making it a viable and respected career path. I know BTA, as a committed partner of the sector,  is committed to ethical and professional practices and we aim to be part of this change, taking steps to reach out to young girls to foster awareness and aspiration. So, on this International Girl Child Day, let's make a commitment—to ourselves and the younger generation. Let's amplify the voices of girls in our communities and bring them into conversations they may never have thought they belonged in. UN Secretary-General António Guterres said, "Women and girls can lead us to a fairer future." And they will, if we give them the tools, knowledge, and confidence to do so. INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE GIRL CHILD 2023 Invest in Girls' Rights: Our Leadership, Our Well-being. This year marks the 11th Anniversary of the International Day of the Girl Child (IGD). According to the United Nations' official website, there will be increased attention on issues that matter to girls in all spheres. Bringing into the fold the governments, policymakers, and the general public. They will also focus on generating more opportunities for them to have their voices heard on the global level. The theme for The International Day of the Girl Child 2023: "Invest in Girls' Rights: Our Leadership, Our Well-being". The goal of this theme is to create an essential moment that focuses and raises the voices of girls while encouraging those in places of power to improve their monetary help for girls' privileges. This year's theme further advocates for a world where women and girls have the valuable chance to impact government strategy, policy and spending to inform the principles and rules that organisations must follow and to decide the needs for new research and developments. A Girl Child struggles two main challenges in life: She is a child, and she is a woman. In patriarchal societies, the girl child experiences discrimination since her earliest stages of life through her childhood straight into adulthood. For young women, higher levels of internal efficacy and agency are associated with an increase in non-electoral participation.
