In the spirit of sharing the full journey and not just the victories... Ahead of a conference I decided to take a chance and sit for the board certification in Community Paramedicine. It was a bold experiment, stepping out of my comfort zone to see if I could meet the standards set by the IBSC. Unfortunately, I fell short by just one question (0.909% to be exact). First, it reaffirms the high standards the IBSC maintains for our industry, highlights the importance of comprehensive knowledge in primary care and coordination — and that there’s always more to learn despite the last 20 years as a paramedic. It’s also reinforced my belief in persistence over intellect. Missing by a narrow margin was disappointing, but hasn’t diminished my resolve. Success isn’t about being the smartest in the room but being the most determined to grow, learn & bounce back. I'm sharing this because we often see a highlight reel of successes in our professional circles, which might give the impression that setbacks are uncommon. But it's these very challenges that teach us and drive us to be better. So here's to embracing the entire journey, the ups and the downs, and moving forward with determination 🥂 To those who are facing similar hurdles — you’re not alone. Remember, patience and persistence is key.

From Two Failed Attempts to SCA Success: Dr. Stella’s Journey Dr. Stella faced significant challenges in conquering the MRCGP SCA exam. Here’s how she overcame personal hurdles and ultimately achieved success. Overcoming Failures Twice Dr. Stella failed the SCA exam twice, leaving her discouraged and questioning her future. She realised she didn’t fully understand the exam. Facing Personal Challenges Dr. Stella also faced external pressures, such as concerns about her visa status and its impact on her family. Despite the stress, she remained focused on her goal. Seeking Personalised Support Dr. Stella sought help from Dr. Erwin Kwun. “I found Dr. Erwin Kwun online, watched his videos, and reached out,” she says. This connection provided personalised guidance, helping her understand the exam format and expectations. SCA Practice and Preparation Intensive role-playing sessions with Dr. Kwun were crucial. “He showed me how to introduce myself, take a focused history, listen to the patient, and involve them in the management plan,” she recalls. Mastering Time Management Dr. Stella improved her time management by starting the management process by the fifth or sixth minute of the consultation, ensuring she had enough time for a comprehensive discussion. Passing the SCA Against All Odds On her third attempt, Dr. Stella scored an impressive 87.5, up from 74.5 and 67.5. Her advice: “Seek objective feedback, find a mentor, and develop a clear plan. You can do it.” The Importance of a Support System Dr. Stella credits her faith, family, friends, colleagues, and peers for their support. “Listening to others who faced similar challenges and succeeded kept me going,” she shares. Achieving Your Goals With the SCA exam behind her, Dr. Stella is excited to become a fully qualified GP.
