Neuroblastoma is a terrible childhood cancer that is often treated with increasingly intensive, toxic and prolonged treatment which can have a huge impact on little bodies. Thankfully, researchers like Dr Greg Goodall from University of South Australia are looking into better and safer ways to treat neuroblastoma, thanks to generous donations from the South Australian community. Dr Goodall is using a new approach to identify which children would benefit from more intense treatment, and those who could be spared from treatment they don't need. His ultimate hope is that his research will lead to new and less toxic treatment options for children in the future. Today, on rare disease day, I found myself sat with a group of incredibly courageous parents and grandparents who have journeyed a cancer diagnosis of their child. It’s been a honour to hear their own unique stories and how Alice’s Arc has created such a community for them. Children’s cancer is rare, yet the most common cause of death by disease in children. Like many other rare diseases very little is known about it and this is one of the most devastating challenges for families, as we have heard today. Also in the room today were researchers from University of Birmingham who are determined to give hope to these families and many others. They are working tirelessly to find answers to ‘why did my child develop cancer’, ‘will CAR-T cell therapy work for my child’, ‘how can we make treatment less harsh’ and many more questions. The collective power of the parents, researchers and generous charitable funders, such as all of those ‘arcs’ listed below, Sara Wakeling (Craddock), LifeArc, The Little Princess Trust , Children with Cancer UK, The Azaylia Foundation as well as many others, is extraordinary and we at Birmingham are so grateful for the way they have stood up, spoke out and generously supported research to make a change. It’s days like today that remind me of why I do what I do, and why making a difference for the few is as important as for the many. #rarediseaseday2024 #rarediseases #rarediseaseday #birminghaminaction #university #universityofbirmingham #collaboration #gratutide #charity #philanthropy

We're finally able to share this project with you all. For the last 2 years we've worked with Karen Hamlen, Ben Hood and an incredible group of teenagers and young adults (TYAs) to create TYAR.org. An age-appropriate resource which helps to inform TYAs about Clinical Trials, Biobanking and Genomics. The entire project was produced by HT; Logo, graphics, branding, videos, animations, photographs and website. We've had the chance to meet some amazing and inspiring TYAs throughout the project. At each stage they we're consulted to see what they'd like the resource to look like and what information it should contain. Take a look and let us know what you think! #creatingyourvision #video #animation #photography #webdesign
After 2 years working with a great group of young people Ben Hood and I are finally there. The TYAR.org websites is launched, we couldn’t have done it without young people’s help, along with an array of parents and professionals. Never underestimate what young people can do. Massive thanks to Cancer Research UK (CRUK), Teenage Cancer Trust, Newcastle Hospitals Charity and HT

As the May 2024 Pittsburgh Marathon approaches, it coincides with the second anniversary of my diagnosis with a horrid cancer called Carcinosarcoma mixed Mullerian Tumor. When I heard the words 'you have cancer,' it was devastating. Life suddenly halted, and the glass that was once half full seemed to drain to emptiness. I was trapped in two opposing time zones: one consumed by fear, where time stood still, and the other rushing towards an uncertain finish line I wasn't ready to cross. Cancer is a landscape of emotional dualities: despair battling hope, crudeness versus grace, ugliness confronting beauty. Despite the overwhelming challenges, I endeavored to start each day with a positive mindset and end it grateful for the beauty and joy still present in my life. Much of this resilience stemmed from the simple acts of kindness from family and friends, reminding me that I mattered and that we would navigate this journey together. Today, I stand before you as a survivor, grateful for the incredible support I received from UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital and their Foundation. Their tireless efforts in raising awareness for underresourced women's cancers have been instrumental in my recovery. Please donate to the Magee-Womens Research Institute & Foundation to support this vital cause. Together, we can ensure that others facing similar battles have access to the care and support they need to overcome cancer's challenges. Let's make a difference in women's lives by fighting this disease. https://lnkd.in/ezMmN3su

An area I'm very familiar with is Patient Assistance...and Susan G. Komen is EXCELLENT at it: With Susan G. Komen's Financial Assistance Program - anyone currently in breast cancer treatments OR living with MBC that is 300% FPL can qualify for a $400 check from Komen to help with everyday life expenses. Last year, Komen was able to give =$11 million to assist 19,256 individuals currently battling breast cancer with our Financial Assistance Program. 98% of survey respondents reporting the assistance reduced financial burden and 97% reporting an increase in their quality of life after receiving assistance. Participants addressed their largest financial need was housing (35%) followed by transportation (29%) and utilities (25%). A compassionate partner who helps leaders like you win | Totally obsessed with great leadership & lifelong learning | Consultant, Coach, & Podcast Host
I think the entire #linkedincommunity is at its best when focused on supporting others in the pursuit of goals. Do you agree? Gregory Bebbington, a dear friend and recent guest on #comfychairspodcast, has a BIG goal this year: ✨ Complete #pelotonia for the tenth year in a row—AND raise $10k to honor his late wife, Melissa. ✨ Let’s break it down: 🚴♂️10 endurance races is a big deal. (IYKYK) 💰Fundraising for a charity is a big endeavor. (#teamintraining alum here and I can vouch for it). 💞Sharing your why can be a big challenge. (We’ve all been there.) This is a chance to show up in big ways to support a great cause! Obviously, donations will go a long way, but there are so many ways to support a goal like this: ➡️ Amplify the cause—whether it’s Greg’s participation or someone in your own life. ➡️ Consider participating yourself. ➡️ Send your thoughts and prayers to everyone training for the race. (This is the right use for those!) ➡️ Take charge of your own health and get educated on cancer screening. Whatever way you can support, I know it will have a big impact!
Apologies for the personal post, but I'm sure I can be forgiven for this one. Some may know and many do no not that 10 years ago, I lost my amazing wife Melissa to Cancer. Every year since I have participated in the Pelotonia Bike Ride to raise money for THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY WEXNER MEDICAL CENTER, COMPREHENSIVE CANCER. This year being my 10th year riding I have committed to raising $5k as a "High Roller", but it would be wonderful to make that $10k for the 10th year. Please consider donating what you can. And also as it is the first day of Colon Cancer Awareness Month, please get yourself check out! https://lnkd.in/gKUNjiCs

At various points in our lives, we confront healthcare crises that leave us feeling lost and uncertain about where to find reliable information. It's a universal experience we can all relate to and the most effective way to feel empowered is by acquiring reliable knowledge. For more than 25 years, the National Comprehensive Cancer Network® (NCCN®) has developed resources to improve the quality of cancer care. These resources include the award-winning NCCN Guidelines for Patients®, which provide an immediate source of evidence-based guidelines to help individuals affected by cancer. As a nurse and an individual who had cancer, these guidelines profoundly impacted my journey, equipping my daughters and me with the information needed to navigate our path forward with confidence. 💡 Discover more about these FREE and downloadable resources at https://lnkd.in/gnvrE9jU. #cancerresources #didyouknow #nonprofit #notforprofit #healthcare
