Helping children and young people with cancer survive their cancer diagnosis

About us

We won’t stop until every child and young person survives cancer. Every day we strive to increase awareness and understanding of cancer in children and young people. We fund research: we’ve funded over 300 research projects leading to the development of better, kinder treatments and significantly contributing to survival rates which we’ve seen improve from 67% to 85.2%*. We support families: from ‘amazing days out’ to funding accommodation close to hospitals, we work with partners to ensure families have the emotional and financial support they need, allowing them to focus on what matters most – their child. We raise awareness: we shine a spotlight on childhood cancer to improve outcomes for thousands of children and young people across the UK. Thanks to our network of experts, we can educate families, the public and the scientific community. * Survival rates are based on 5-year survival. The 84% figure for 2017 is an estimated figure by the Office for National Statistics, exact figures will be known in 2023. Registered Charity Number: 298405

Charlie, a cancer survivor turned marathon runner was diagnosed with cancer in 2017 as an adult. Charlie has been running for Children with Cancer UK since 2018, raising over £10,000 along the way. "Hearing the stats about how cancer affects Black families is incredibly eye-opening. We have come so far in history and it is our right to have access to the best medical care for our children. I am a massive supporter and fundraiser of Children with Cancer UK and all the work that they do. They support me and meeting families at their events makes you realise the importance of their work. They are a charity that supports families from all backgrounds, no matter what their circumstances are. If you are a Black family, need some support, want to learn more about childhood cancer or want to share your story, reach out to them." - Charlie, Children with Cancer UK runner. Thank you so much Charlie for your continued support. If you are a family from a Black background, we would love to hear from you. Get in touch: stories@childrenwithcancer.org.uk.

(Pt2) This Black History Month, we will be sharing some hard-hitting facts about cancer in the Black and Asian community. Starting with why Black and Asian people have higher rates of getting and dying from many kinds of cancers, compared to members of other racial and ethnic groups. There are barriers to diagnosis and treatment: • Screening: Lower screening uptake among ethnic minority groups is linked to cancer stigma and often results in delayed diagnoses. • Accessibility: Juggling responsibilities and securing appointments can be challenging for many in these communities. • Data Accuracy: Improvements have been made in identifying ethnicity within Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) data, but issues with completeness and accuracy persist. • Health Education: There is a lack of health education and awareness about cancer and available support services in Black, Asian and Minoritised Ethnic communities. *Source: Cancer Research UK, March 2022 and research done by the Race Equality Foundation, 2024.

📣 Vital research findings pointing to improved treatment for children with Group 3 medulloblastoma brain tumours have been revealed in two major studies published in the journal NeuroOncology on Tuesday 8 October. 👉 Medulloblastoma is among the most common malignant brain tumours of childhood cancer and is responsible for around 5 to 10% of childhood cancer deaths. 💜 Children with Cancer UK, together with Cancer Research UK (CRUK), The Brain Tumour Charity, Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity, Blue Skye Thinking and Little Hero - Brain Tumour Charity funded the two-phase £5 million INSTINCT research programme led by Newcastle University. 📝 Now, findings from the studies could form the foundation of more targeted treatments for many children, leading to improved survival, less severe long-term side effects and improved quality of life. 🔬 Led by Professor Steve Clifford, Director of Newcastle University Centre for Cancer, the INSTINCT research programme set out to identify key genetic defects and find effective targeted approaches to treating Group 3 medulloblastoma. (Pt1) This Black History Month, we will be sharing some hard-hitting facts about cancer in the Black and Asian community. Starting with: Why Black and Asian people have higher rates of getting and dying from many kinds of cancers, compared to members of other racial and ethnic groups? Cancer Research UK found that Black and Asian individuals generally wait longer for a cancer diagnosis than their White counterparts. It is difficult to understand the causes of this because of: • Poor Data Quality: Data on minority groups is often incomplete or inaccurate, which hampers efforts to understand and address their specific needs. • Negative Care Experiences: Patients from minority communities frequently report more negative experiences with cancer care compared to White patients. • Lack of Cultural Awareness: Health care providers often lack training and understanding of the specific needs of Black and minority ethnic communities. *Source: Cancer Research UK, March 2022 and research done by the Race Equality Foundation, 2024.
