Hi again friends and connections and Happy Dry July Eve. Last Tuesday I posted that I was participating in Dry July to raise funds to help people suffering from cancer. I set myself a (apparently too modest) target of $500 (AUD) for the month of July. Well, that target was passed on about 28 June, so I have had to revise my fundraising target – I now think that $1500 is achievable. With almost 2,000 connections between LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram, I just need a hit rate of 10% of all of you to donate $5 (you can’t buy a drink for that anywhere), and then I’ll get to the $1,500 with room to spare. If you are donating in Euros, GB Pounds, or US Dollars, I’ll be happy with 3 (euro, GBP, USD). This is also a little bit of an experiment about the social medial algorithms. We know that posts don’t go to all our friends and connections, so improving the reach of this post is really important. A huge thankyou to the people who have already donated and also to those who have commented on and shared posts – you are putting these algorithms to work to help cancer sufferers. One final thing, in preparation for Dry July, I have abstained from alcohol this week, so I have done the hard part – breaking the habit. I’m sleeping better and my clothes are ‘not as firm’. If you participate in Giving Tuesday, what is your motivation? My motivation is the great organizations I get to support through donating to charity teams like Imerman Angels. This year I'm starting Giving Tuesday early by kicking off fundraising for the 2024 Chicago Marathon via Team Imerman. Their mission is to provide comfort and understanding for all cancer fighters, survivors, previvor, and caregivers through a personalized one-on-one connection with someone who has been there. Imerman Angels envisions a world where cancer is not a solitary experience.

A massive well done to everyone today, a huge team effort! Group First took part in Football Shirt Friday, raising money to help the fight against Bowel Cancer. Bobby Moore sadly passed away at the age of 51 after a battle with Bowel Cancer. Since his death, the Bobby Moore Fund has raised over £30 Million and has seen a 30% decrease in mortality rates for people with Bowel Cancer. However, bowel cancer is the second most common cause of #cancer death in the UK and there are around 43,000 new #bowel cancer cases in the UK every year and #fundraising days like today are important to #support and #help raise #awareness. In total we raised £240 for the Bobby Moore Fund! 100% of the money raised is donated to Cancer Research UK through the #fund. I'm raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support this June and July by challenging myself to swim 21 miles (the length of The Channel) to raise £200 for Macmillan Cancer Support. 🏊♀️ Link to fundraiser page below 👇 Why am I doing it? Like so many of us, I know people who have benefited from the amazing practical support Macmillan Cancer provides to people living with cancer. They are incredible!! Macmillan give people with cancer everything they've got. If you're diagnosed, your worries are their worries. They do whatever it takes. But without your help they can't support everyone who needs them. Not only do they help those living with cancer, their families and the cancer workforce, they also raise funds, research cancer care, run public campaigns and influence policy decision-makers. 💚 But the challenge in the UK continues to grow. It's estimated that on average, someone is diagnosed with cancer at least every 90 seconds, so there are more than 3 million people living with cancer, and this is expected to rise to 3.5 million in 2025 and 4 million by 2030. 📈 We're facing huge challenges as the number of people living with cancer is growing, the system can’t keep up, expertise is being lost within the cancer workforce and there are inequalities in the way cancer is treated and diagnosed in the UK. Alongside this, there are changes and opportunities that could be potentially transformative for people with cancer with new technologies, treatments, richer data and information available. Macmillan is working to respond to this environment and make sure they're doing the best they can for people with cancer now and into the future. The PMC not only reflects the values of leadership and commitment that I hold dear in business, but it also puts those values into action in the fight against cancer. The true magic of the PMC lies in the vision of its founder, Billy Starr. He didn’t just create a fundraising event—he built a movement grounded in commitment and ownership. From the start, Starr made it clear that the PMC wasn’t just about cycling; it was about taking on a mission to fight cancer.
