#GeorgeLand conducted a research study in the 1960s for NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration that found that 98% of children reach #genius levels by age five, but this level of intelligence drastically decreases afterward. When observing Gwydion, one quality that stands out is his complete absorption in what he is doing. Another field of research has found that children up to the age of seven experience high levels of #thetawaves, which are associated with deep states of creativity, intuition, daydreaming, and fantasizing. Theta waves are also a repository for memories, emotions, and sensations. I’m sharing a minute and a half of Gwydion’s play, but he stayed in this state of curiosity for over 45 minutes. The blocks that you see Gwydion playing with are Gift 2 from #FroebelBlocks. You may not have heard of these before, but they were invented by #FrederickFroebel in 1837, along with the Garden for the Children, or #Kindergarten. Froebel blocks were a series of learning devices used by many famous architects and designers, including #MayaLin, #FrankLloydWright, #LeCorbusier, and #BuckminsterFuller during their early years. Throughout his life, Wright promoted the philosophy of Froebel’s gifts. As education became more standardized to accommodate the needs of an industrial economy, the Froebel system gradually died out. Let's dive into the world of circles and discover the magic behind Pi. What is Pi? Imagine you have a perfectly round pizza. Pi (π) is the number you get when you divide the pizza's circumference (the distance around the pizza) by its diameter (the distance across the pizza through its center). No matter how big or small the pizza is, this number always remains the same - approximately 3.14. That's why we celebrate Pi Day on March 14th! Why is Pi Important? Pi is not just a number for mathematicians to ponder; it has practical applications in many fields. Engineers use Pi to calculate the area of circular objects and the volume of cylinders. Architects rely on Pi when designing buildings with circular components. NASA uses Pi to calculate the trajectories of spacecraft. At The Launchpad, we take inspiration from trailblazers like Mary W. Jackson who defied barriers to blaze new trails in science and technology. On this Juneteenth, we celebrate Jackson's pivotal role in launching America into the space age. In the 1950s, Jackson's mathematical genius caught NASA's attention, despite the racism and sexism of the times. She was relegated to a segregated computing unit at first, calculating rocket trajectories by hand. But Jackson's determination launched her to new heights - she became NASA's first Black female engineer in 1958. Jackson's precision data analysis helped launch Alan Shepard's historic 1961 mission as the first American in space. Her computational work soared even higher, clearing the path for the launch of John Glenn's orbital flight a year later. Like a rocket boosting exploratory missions, Jackson's achievements as a "human computer" propelled America's nascent space program. The story of Jackson's courage and brilliance defying racial and gender prejudices to reach for the stars inspired the film Hidden Figures. She personified the spirit of shattering boundaries to launch transformative innovation. The federal government and the space industry are facing enormous challenges in inspiring and nurturing the new pioneers who will lead us in the next chapter of the space age. University of Massachusetts Lowell, a Minority Serving Institution, is at the forefront of training a new generation of #STEM tinkerers to shoot for the stars in science, technology, engineering, and math. Supriya Chakrabarti, director of the Lowell Center for Space Science and Technology, has issued a call to action in this regard in SpaceNews to commemorate the upcoming centennial in 2026 of Robert Goddard's maiden launch of a liquid-fueled rocket. "We can ignite that new generation of tinkerers on a grander scale, with a nationwide contest involving students in all 50 states to design and build small satellite prototypes to commemorate Goddard’s achievement," Chakrabarti proposes. "The approaching centennial is just what we need to fuel a new generation of space pioneers." The anniversary also coincides with NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s plans to land the first woman and first person of color on the moon. This, Chakrabarti writes, "presents a once-in-a-generation opportunity for a national initiative that could help invigorate the STEM curriculum like the Apollo moon program first did in the 1960s." "We urge government agencies — NASA, the United States Space Force, the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Federal Communications Commission — and leaders in the space industry to come together to seize this opportunity by mentoring students and providing launch operations and mission control for a nationwide commemoration," he added. #space #STEM #rocketscience #technology #innovation #cislunar #artemis #moonrace #satellites #highereducation

Jun Wang, the James E. Ashton Professor of Engineering, is Iowa’s lead investigator on Tropospheric Emissions: Monitoring Pollution or TEMPO.
