I often tell people who ask me to share my story that I’ve lived my life backwards. At 20 I had the audacity to march in my boss’s office and ask to be considered for a director position. Nailed it. My first job was in a restaurant. I did it merely to make money, a means to fund my education, pay rent, be a side hustle. The thought of it being career never crossed my mind. A few decades later, years of weaving my way through F&B departments across the states, in the midst of a forced pause, it clicked. I loved serving people. I loved being able to call work a place where I could watch the sunset, hear the sound of the ocean or climb mountains. I filled my cup with the stories of guests from all over the world and felt like it was always a holiday. When the industry started to open back up I dived in head first. Gratitude oozing from my pores to be given the opportunity to join a team in a storied location. So this morning while on the elliptical listening to the end of a podcast I could’ve help but continue to smile as the conversation unfolded. From wellness, to deciding which company to work for, to food waste, to organization and training, to openings and menu building, Josiah Mackenzie of Hospitality Daily and Marc Lores Panades of Aethos Hotels coming through my earbuds. I could quote almost every word 🚲 💡“It’s not a work, it’s not a job, it’s a lifestyle. So to embrace what many people in hospitality believe. It’s not just 9 to 5. We embrace, we believe.” 💡”You don’t feel bloated, you don’t feel tired after you come.” 💡”There are too many things in life that…limit our happiness.” 💡”It’s not rocket science, hospitality. Smile, take care of people.” 💡”We don’t save lives. We are not cardiologist. We are brain surgeons.” 💡”Forward progress looks like less and returning to the basics.” 💡“Being busy doesn’t mean that you are busy, maybe sometimes you are disorganized.” 💡“This produce has been produced to be eaten.” 💡“Changing the attitude and the mindset. It is not food waste. This is resources we are throwing.” 💡“Sustainability is becoming mainstream.” I’m often asked how I manage stress, left speechless. Today I found my words, hospitality is a lifestyle. Hospitality is in everything we do. It lives in every sector and is a part of our lives. If you’re lucky enough to surround yourself with those who cultivate this mindset, your passion will shine, stress will dissipate. The industry is not all butterflies and roses, but the job, if we break it down, is simply to make people happy. And how cool is that. I hope you take a listen to the show and subscribe, and follow Marc and subscribe to his newsletter, Sustainable Mindset. “There’s a lack of talent. Many have left the industry.” If you’ve lost your spark, maybe this will light the way for you to join us under all the rainbows. I’ll continue to live my life backwards 😉 “At the end it’s all about caring.” 🕊

Working with coaches and leaders to help them develop their courage-building skills, so that they can coach with confidence and clarity | Leadership Coach | Dare to Lead™️ Facilitator
I came across this podcast episode today with Will Guidara - The secret ingredients of great hospitality. It reminded me what I love about the hospitality industry. At its heart, hospitality is about creating moments of human connection. "In restaurants our reason for being is to make people feel seen. It's to make them feel welcome, it's to give them a sense of belonging" And as Will suggests, human connection is not just about our guests, it's also about our teams. If you're a leader in hospitality, how are you creating a culture of real human connection in your team? The industry faces so many extraordinary challenges post-COVID - supply-chain impediments, cost of living increases for our guests, rising energy prices, finding and retaining talent to name a few! It's easy to lose sight of why hospitality professionals and the businesses we work in, do what we do. If you need reminding (and even if you don't!) I encourage you to listen to this short podcast.
