These robots are ready for the Moon 🌕 After engineers finished assembling them and putting them through a series of punishing tests at JPL, the CADRE rovers are another step closer to their mission of working together to autonomously explore the lunar surface. CADRE, which is short for "Cooperative Autonomous Distributed Robotic Exploration," is a technology demonstration meant to show that a group of robotic spacecraft can work together to accomplish tasks and record data as a team, without explicit commands from mission controllers on Earth. JPL ROBOTICS "NASA’s Network of Small Moon-Bound Rovers Is Ready to Roll" "Construction and testing are complete on the CADRE rovers, which will map the lunar surface together as a tech demo to show the promise of multirobot missions. A trio of small rovers that will explore the Moon in sync with one another are rolling toward launch. Engineers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California recently finished assembling the robots, then subjected them to a punishing series of tests to ensure they’ll survive their jarring rocket ride into space and their travels in the unforgiving lunar environment. Part of a technology demonstration called CADRE (Cooperative Autonomous Distributed Robotic Exploration), each solar-powered rover is about the size of a carry-on suitcase. The rovers and associated hardware will be installed on a lander headed for the Moon’s Reiner Gamma region. They’ll spend the daylight hours of a lunar day – the equivalent of about 14 days on Earth – conducting experiments by autonomously exploring, mapping, and using ground-penetrating radar that will peer below the Moon’s surface. The goal is to show that a group of robotic spacecraft can work together to accomplish tasks and record data as a team without explicit commands from mission controllers on Earth. Starship Flight 4. Yesterday, June 4th, 2024 the Federal Aviation Administration issued a launch license to SpaceX for the Starship Flight 4 test mission scheduled to lift off tomorrow June 6th, from the Starbase facility in South Texas. The 120-minute test window opens at 7:00 a.m. CT. "As part of its request for license modification, SpaceX proposed three scenarios involving the Starship entry that would not require an investigation in the event of the loss of the vehicle. The FAA approved the scenarios as test induced damage exceptions after evaluating them as part of the flight safety and flight hazard analyses and confirming they met public safety requirements," FAA officials said in the statement. "If a different anomaly occurs with the Starship vehicle an investigation may be warranted as well as if an anomaly occurs with the Super Heavy booster rocket." According to SpaceX, Starship’s third flight test made significant progress towards a future of reliable, reusable rockets. The test accomplished several notable firsts: 1. Starship’s first reentry from space 2. The initial opening and closing of its payload door in space 3. A successful propellant transfer demonstration. The third flight provided crucial data for future ship-to-ship propellant transfers, essential for missions such as returning astronauts to the Moon under NASA’s Artemis program. The fourth flight test will shift the focus from achieving orbit to demonstrating the capability to return and reuse Starship and Super Heavy. The primary goals include executing a landing burn and soft splashdown of the Super Heavy booster in the Gulf of Mexico, and achieving a controlled entry of Starship. Starship could have a big impact on small launch vehicles - WASHINGTON — A large launch vehicle could end up having a big effect on the small launch vehicle market through low prices and encouraging customers to build larger satellites. - The emergence of SpaceX’s Starship vehicle, which is designed to place 100 metric tons or more into low Earth orbit, has captured the attention of companies developing vehicles that can place one metric ton or less into orbit because of Starship’s potential to further reshape a market already affected by the company’s Falcon 9. https://lnkd.in/eWK_N-nK

SpaceX Makes First Successful Starship Flight The Starship, the new generation rocket with which SpaceX hopes to carry out more ambitious space missions, took off this Thursday from a base in Texas, United States, for its fourth test flight, resulting in its most successful flight ever. The flight lasted about an hour and ended with a landing in the Indian Ocean, as planned. In this case, SpaceX no longer intended to complete a re-entry of the Starship into the atmosphere, and the rocket was not expected to land on dry land or a sea platform. About 49 minutes after the start of the flight, the Starship began its re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere and, after about an hour and six minutes of flight, it successfully completed its first landing and landed in the Indian Ocean, to great applause. In addition, the company also managed to make a successful landing of the Super Heavy booster (the underside of the space vehicle) in the Gulf of Mexico, seven minutes and 20 seconds after launch.  Elon Musk, founder and CEO of SpaceX, called today's test flight an “epic achievement”. The launch was broadcast live on the X social network. The unmanned spacecraft is classified as a super-heavy launch vehicle and is praised as the largest and most powerful rocket ever built. Honestly, I wasn’t sure this would actually work, but Mechazilla caught the Super Heavy Booster! Just to give you some perspective, that’s like a 20-story building being caught by a mechanical structure. SpaceX is taking innovation to a whole new level, and it’s incredible to witness.
