The European Space Agency (ESA) is Europe’s gateway to space. Its mission is to shape the development of Europe’s space capability and ensure that investment in space continues to deliver benefits to the citizens of Europe and the world. ESA is an international organisation with 22 Member States. By coordinating the financial and intellectual resources of its members, it can undertake programmes and activities far beyond the scope of any single European country. ESA's 22 Member States are Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Slovenia, Slovakia, Latvia and Lithuania are Associate Members. Canada takes part in some projects under a cooperation agreement. 🆕 Our ESA/Webb Picture of the Month returns to the Phantom Galaxy! 👻 🔴 The Phantom Galaxy, also known as M74, lies 32 million light-years away – and almost face-on to Earth. This, coupled with its well-defined spiral arms, makes it a favourite target for astronomers studying spiral galaxies 🌀 🔴 This image features data from two of the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope’s instruments, #MIRI and #NIRCam, their infrared observations capturing creeping tendrils of gas, dust and stars. 🔴 The dark red regions trace the filaments of warm dust, the brighter red regions show light from complex molecules forming on dust grains, and orange and yellow reveal regions of gas ionised by young star clusters. 🔴 Stellar feedback (the outpouring of energy from stars into the environment that forms them) has a dramatic effect here, creating a network of bright knots as well as cavernous black bubbles. Read more about it here 👉 https://ow.ly/eclh50TUtvW Check out a version of the image with just the NIRCam data 👉https://ow.ly/b3KX50TUtvV #WebbSeesFarther 📷 ESA/Webb, NASA, CSA, A. 📷This composite image, created out of two different pointings from Hubble, shows the barred spiral galaxy NGC 1512 (left) and the dwarf galaxy NGC 1510 (right). Both galaxies are about 30 million light-years away from Earth and currently in the process of merging. At the end of this process NGC 1512 will have cannibalised its smaller companion.👉https://lnkd.in/epdFPq_3 Credits: ESA/Hubble, NASA ESA Hubble and Webb Space Telescopes NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration
