As the summer season unfolds, prioritising the safety of our team in the rising temperatures becomes essential. For those working outdoors, the heat introduces a set of unique challenges. We're keen to share our strategies for ensuring the well-being of our staff during these warmer months. Hydration is Vital: We equip our team with water bottles and ensure they have access to cool water and regular breaks to stay hydrated. Sun Protection: Our summer uniform includes lightweight, long-sleeved shirts and pants, broad-brim hats, and sunscreen is provided to shield our team from harmful UV rays. Intelligent Scheduling: We aim to schedule more demanding tasks earlier in the day and start earlier when possible to avoid the peak heat hours. As we navigate the rising summer temperatures, ensuring the safety and well-being of our team on-site is paramount. Here are 5 Tips to Protect Your Team in the Heat: 1. Provide Plenty of Water and Electrolytes: Ensure access to cool, fresh water and electrolytes throughout the day. 2. Schedule Regular Breaks: Implement breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas to allow cooling. Adjust based on heat and humidity levels. 3. Proper Training: Train workers for hot outdoor conditions before work begins. 4. Wear Appropriate Clothing: Encourage lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing. Today’s (3/8/24) #FunFactFriday, and future Friday posts almost came to an end, so today I thought we'd cover #PPE and Safe Work Practices. Let’s jump to the end, then work backwards into the #safety aspect. Last weekend I broke through the ice while fishing (10ft deep water), spent almost an hour in the water before a rope was thrown to me, and my body temperature dropped to 87F (30.5C). These facts were not so fun. How did I get myself into this situation? Overconfidence in my PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and for just one moment I skipped my Safe Practices. In this case, my PPE was a pair of hand spikes. I always carry these spikes, and felt that if I fell through, I’d be able to pull myself out. My Safe Practices were to only walk through areas I had confirmed the ice was safe. As I started to pack up my fishing gear to leave, I took a shortcut across an area that I hadn’t checked. I veered away from following Safe Practices, in part because I was trying to save some time and I was overconfident in my PPE. The ice broke, I stayed calm as I knew it was time to use my PPE and get myself safe. Except I experienced unanticipated challenges. First, when I grabbed for my spikes from my pocket, one came out, and at the end of the rope that connects them, the second spike was missing. I assumed the knot let go and it fell to the bottom of the lake. Now I only had one had spike. Second, every time I grabbed the ice to pull myself up, the ice broke. I knew what I had to do, but having only one hand spike combined with large amount of weak ice that kept breaking every time I tried, exhausted my energy in the cold water and did not allow me to self-rescue. While there are plenty of lessons learned, two are universal: 1) Treat safety at home the same way you treat safety at work. Had I checked my PPE in my home life, the way I check my PPE at work, that knot would have never come loose. 2) Don’t let the existence of PPE stop you from following Safe Work Practices 100% of the time. Following Safe Practices only 99.999% of the time this last weekend almost ended me.

We’re just barely into June, and boy is it hot already! Hot outside… and even hotter inside our work facility. Heat from machinery + natural outside heat + humidity because the weather isn’t always our friend = me feeling like I’m melting all the time 🫠 Working in a die cast facility, heat is inevitable regardless of the time of year. That’s why it’s so important to be proactive. Take care of yourself first and foremost. Stay hydrated with water and electrolytes. Eat! Plan meals and snacks that fuel your body. Be mindful of portions, ingredients, and timing - don’t put yourself in a position to become lightheaded or faint from food choices or the lack thereof. Keep your attire cool while adhering to dress code. This one can be tricky, but it is possible. Don’t overexert yourself. Find a work pace that is reasonable and comfortable without overdoing things. Take regular breaks. Be responsible with the number and length of breaks. At the very least, pop in front of a fan or open door for a quick cool off. Keep an eye on your coworkers from time to time as well. A friendly reminder to drink water and stay cool can go a long way. Working in the heat isn’t always easy. Make it a part of your routine everyday to plan and take care of yourself in the heat.
