Today is Emancipation Day in Canada/Turtle Island. This day commemorates the enactment of the The Slavery Abolition Act of 1833. (*It should be noted that nothing truly changed for Black Canadians until years later, in 1838.) This is an important day for organizations in Canada to engage in some deep reflection. How? Let's ask ourselves the following 7 questions: 1. How is your organization commemorating this day? 2. How is your organization sharing knowledge + resources on Black Canadian history (beyond tokenistic emails, etc.)? 3. How is your organization developing resources, supports and opportunities for Black staff? 4. Does your organizational leadership include Black Canadians? 5. Is your organization a healthy, equitable + safe space for Black Canadians? 6. Has your organization researched, asked about, and considered the barriers to #5 + #6? 7. On June 19, 1865, the news of emancipation finally reached Galveston, Texas, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. This day stands as a powerful reminder of the struggle for freedom and the ongoing fight for equality and justice. At Business Minds, we honor the resilience and achievements of Black entrepreneurs and communities. Juneteenth is a celebration of the power of knowledge, marking the day when the echoes of freedom finally reached those who had long been denied it. It reminds us that the quest for liberty is an ongoing journey, demanding constant vigilance and a steadfast commitment to justice. As we commemorate Juneteenth, let's renew our pledge to fight against systemic racism, eliminate inequality, and build a society where everyone feels included. Why Juneteenth Matters to Afro-Latinos and ALPFA: For our Afro-Latino community, Juneteenth is a celebration of resilience and a recognition of the shared history and struggles faced by Black and Afro-Latino people. It's a day to honor the contributions and cultures that enrich diverse heritages. ALPFA'S mission is to empower and develop Latino leaders. As torchbearers of excellence, our achievements and character serve as beacons of inspiration for others to follow. It's essential to recognize that our personal success is intertwined with the collective narrative of the Black community. By achieving greatness, we will not only defy stereotypes and break barriers but also contribute to reshaping perceptions and rewriting the narrative surrounding Black excellence. Our accomplishments become a source of pride and empowerment, illustrating that there are no limits to what can be achieved with determination and resilience. Moreover, being a living testament to greatness involves embodying qualities that uplift the community, such as leadership, integrity, and a commitment to positive change. As we navigate our own path to success, consider how our journey can inspire others to pursue their dreams and overcome challenges. As Black men, our pursuit of greatness is not solely about personal success; it's about fostering a legacy of empowerment, resilience, and achievement within the broader Black community.
