Black people with disabilities have been overlooked in our history books, or if their contributions were highlighted, their disability was erased. Prominent figures such as Harriet Tubman, Fannie Lou Hamer, and Mary Davidson were disabled, but their disabilities were either erased or downplayed in mainstream historical accounts. It is important to recognize the complete narratives of these pioneers, including their disabilities. "September marks a month of important diversity awareness and celebrations. This month, we recognize the intersectionality of diverse experiences that contribute to a more inclusive world: Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept 15 - Oct 15) honors the culture, contributions, and history of the Hispanic and Latinx communities. National Suicide Prevention Month reminds us to prioritize mental health awareness and support for all individuals, emphasizing that mental health is as diverse as we are. Deaf Awareness Month raises visibility for the Deaf community, promoting inclusivity and access for individuals of all abilities. These observances are a reminder that diversity is more than just a word—it's the foundation of an equitable, empathetic, and thriving society. Let’s take this month to not only celebrate differences but also to educate, advocate, and be intentional in our actions toward fostering an inclusive environment. With information and confidence, we know that people with disabilities are safer, less likely to be victims of abuse, and have the opportunity to have meaningful relationships. This fun and playful session will look at the issues and skills needed to decide if you want to have a friend or relationship. Topics cover basic skills like identifying different types of relationships, public and private (what is ok in each), friendship, decision making, and communication, moving from friend to sweetheart, and being in a relationship. Last year, I received a lot of critical backlash from several White disabled people and had been treated like complete garbage all because I made the decision to advocate for Black & Indigenous People of Color with disabilities (like myself). . White fragility had become the immediate defense mechanism and I was constantly receiving their projections- which ultimately invalidated me personally, as a Black disabled person, and my community I advocate for. It was as if their disability and diagnosis (to the individuals who ridiculed me) was far more important than my “support for Black folks with neurodivergence”. . As I sit down to write my chapter of my anthology, I am writing with an understanding that I can no longer be silent and allow the stigmas we, as Black and Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC) with neurodivergence, are up against. . My specific disability is not as important to many people and is often mocked (I hear comments and judgements all the time). . This chapter (and entire book) is more than just me and the other co-authors sharing our experiences and providing expertise- it’s about creating an “Underground Railroad” for BIPOC disabled people to be seen, to be validated, and liberated equitably.
