As Climate Week unfolds in NYC 🌍, it seems like a fitting time to share that I’ve joined Mahoney Communications Group as a Senior Vice President in a consulting capacity. It’s a unique role, as it lets me dive head first into the climate space and help elevate important voices. This morning, I heard Mary Yap speak about her work at Lithos Carbon during a Climate Week breakfast hosted by Boundless Impact Research & Analytics (client). I was intrigued, so I did what most of us do—I googled her. One of the first things I came across was a Fast Company article where she said, “I wanted to focus the rest of my life on climate change.” I loved that. That one sentence, and the passion oozing from it, gave me a sense of hope for this world. Mary is one of many doing incredible work on climate change, and it got me thinking about how often we discover inspiring stories just by searching online. What we see is often the result of smart PR—connecting the right messages with the right people. That's what we do at Mahoney. We work with people and companies making a real difference in climate tech, sustainable energy, and clean energy. We help them get the word out about their breakthroughs and tell compelling stories that highlight the urgency of climate action. We help amplify the stories that need to be heard. Every story told, every article written, every interview given has the power to create a ripple effect. Excited to focus my work—and life—on making waves for a better future, one story at a time. 💚 Let's get this climate party started. #ClimateWeekNYC #ClimateAction #PR #ThoughtLeadership

Two insights of note in this post on the state of climate governance and disclosure as we round the corner into 2025. I repeat: leadership is more important now than ever to remain competitive in the net-zero economy of tomorrow. 👇 ➕ Boards need stronger foresight to seize climate opportunities As management teams focus on evaluating and mitigating climate-related risks, boards need strong visions of what success and competitive advantage look like in a net-zero future. Climate Engagement Canada (CEC) research suggests that boards have established comprehensive oversight on climate matters, however few directors have demonstrated the competencies necessary to advise on the climate-related risks and opportunities they are responsible for overseeing. This raises concerns about the capacity and potential conflicts of interest that current directors pose in navigating the economic transition effectively. Independent skill testing, further training and more stringent expertise requirements are necessary for directors to effectively oversee increasingly complex climate decisions. ➕ The evolving landscape of disclosure requirements The international ecosystem of sustainability and climate-related disclosure continues to fumble towards standardized requirements. The Canadian Sustainability Standards Board (CSSB) is currently in the throes of finalizing and approving the proposed Canadian Sustainability Disclosure Standards (CSDS 1 and 2). South of the border, the United States continues to be mired in political polarization; just one month after releasing its much-anticipated new rules on climate reporting in March 2024, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) paused its implementation after being sued by over two dozen states and other entities. Meanwhile, the staggering scope and specificity of the EFRAG European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) are pushing the boundaries of transparency. Despite the promise of coalescence and interoperability still being far from reality, we see best efforts being made to disclose with integrity and clarity, and applaud leadership in this regard. We anticipate the disclosure landscape to stabilize in 2025 as standard setters finalize their requirements and entities gain experience satisfying them. However, we see a worrying and widening chasm taking shape between American deadlock and European leadership, which may have important consequences for Canadian climate ambition. Leadership is more important now than ever to remain competitive in the net-zero economy of tomorrow.
Climate Week NYC 2024 brought together business leaders, investors, academics, policymakers and civil society representatives across 700+ venues to discuss how to best expedite ambitious climate action. Here are five takeaways from North America’s largest climate event: 1. Boards need stronger foresight to seize climate opportunities 2. Engage with policymakers to expedite progress 3. The importance of value chain partnerships and collaboration 4. Social equity integration into climate transition plans 5. Increasing but fragmented disclosure requirements For more detailed insights, visit: https://lnkd.in/eXeMgeRJ Thank you to Graham Van Every, Natalie Dale, Stephen Penstone and Emily B. The new VertueLab report on the PNW Climate Tech Investment Ecosystem is fascinating and incredibly important. Applause to Saghani Consulting LLC for delivering a beautiful and cohesive document. From the Executive Summary: "Emerging opportunities offer avenues for progress, including federal programs, pro-climate legislation, and the emergence of new entrepreneurial #ecosystems outside of the major metropolitan areas. The globalized fundraising landscape, catalyzed by the pandemic, enables entrepreneurs to access a broader pool of investors, and efforts to rebrand the #PNW as a #climatetechhub are underway. However, there remains an urgent need to catalyze greater, more patient, and more adaptable #investmentpools for innovations with broad systemic impact. This requires innovative #financing methods and strategic direction for both #funders and #investors." What do you think? How can we fortify our #climatetech community here in #PDX? 🤔
