Artificial intelligence (AI) is spurring significant construction and investment in new data centers. This requires an immense amount of continuous power, which presents challenges for both local electric grids and broader climate goals. Join The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine for a workshop on November 12-13 to explore how to map, measure, and mitigate the impacts of AI data center electricity usage. During the workshop, speakers from the computing industry, utilities, and government will discuss how recent developments in AI have the potential to impact energy demands, identify options to mitigate increased electricity use and emissions, and consider regional implications related to data center siting and renewable resource availability. 👇 TODAY: The National Academies are hosting an important conversation on the intersection between housing and compounding disasters. Register here: https://lnkd.in/ehGMFG5a
As many southern states are starting the long recovery process from the recent hurricanes, it is important to analyze how we handle recovery and re-build our infrastructure to withstand compounding disasters. That's why the The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine is hosting a timely Climate Conversation this Friday focused on the impact compounding disasters has on housing. We'll be joined by Christopher Flavelle, Carlos Martín, and Tracy Kijewski-Correa. We partnered with the Washington National Cathedral to hold a discussion on bridging faith and climate action. At the event, Julia Haggerty, Patricia (Paty) Romero-Lankao, and Norman Wirzba explored the very real challenges of climate change and humanized the clean energy transition. They shared stories of hope, fear, uncertainty, love, and community in the context of understanding and addressing a changing climate. “So for a long time, there was perhaps the assumption that poverty and inequality was a challenge of the here and now, and climate change was more of a challenge that would play out over time into the future,” noted Pedro Conceição, Director and Lead Author of the Human Development Report Office - United Nations Development Programme, UNDP. But we’re now starting to recognize that there is an entanglement between the two. Listen to our conversation with Pedro to learn more about how the UNDP is thinking about this connection and how we can address both inequality while mitigating climate change. Today is the one year anniversary of the National Academies second decarbonization report, which lays out a framework for how United States can decarbonize the economy. The report makes a set of actionable recommendations to help policymakers implement an equitable energy transition over the next decade and beyond. In just the past year, we've seen the report make a big impact! It been downloaded over 8,400 times, cited by legislators, and discussed by policymakers across the country! Join the National Academies in celebrating this anniversary by spreading awareness about the report. https://ow.ly/L2nz50TNE71 #Decarbonization #EnergyTransition #CleanEnergy #EquitableEnergy

The first Climate Crossroads Congressional Fellowship cohort was a success, with fellows improving their scientific literacy, connecting with experts, and building stronger relationships with their colleagues on the Hill! Read more from the director of the program, Ryan Gallasch, on his experience building out the program!
This summer marked the inaugural fellowship cohort coming to end. I am reflecting on the journey of launching this program with the collaboration of my colleagues and the big takeaway for me was how inspiring it was to see the cohort grow and learn together. I'm thrilled to be taking so many lessons learned from the first year, and building on the fellowship's success. Read my thoughts below 👇

Though short-lived in the atmosphere, methane is over 80 times more effective than carbon dioxide at trapping heat over a 20-year period. Together with reducing carbon dioxide emissions, large reductions in methane emissions are needed to limit warming and impacts from climate change – yet global methane emissions continue to rise each year. A new report from The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine recommends a research agenda to fully assess the need and potential for atmospheric methane removal. Atmospheric methane removal is human interventions to accelerate the conversion of methane in the atmosphere to a less potent form or to physically remove methane from the atmosphere and store it elsewhere, but this approach is nascent. This new report identifies five priority research areas that would inform the technical, economic, and social viability of atmospheric methane removal at climate-relevant scales.
