I'm happy to share that a RAND report has been published on the risks from emerging and disruptive transportation technologies. Steven Popper, Hye Min Park, Zara Fatima Abdurahaman, Jalal Awan, Joe Iacobucci, Sydney Maves, Adam Cohen, and I completed the work for The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP). In the report, we review the risks posed by four transportation technologies: #electricvehicles, #autonomousvehicles, #modmaas, and #advancedairmobility. We also provide an adaptive risk register framework for cataloguing and tracking risks over time. #mobilityondemand #mobilityasaservice #airtaxi #robotaxi #driverlessvehicles #EVs #transportation #Nationalacademies #NCHRP #BEVs https://lnkd.in/gHnWHjeA

Our report on Risks Related to Emerging and Disruptive Transportation Technologies is out! Conventional risk assessments consider the severity and likelihood of an incident occurring. However, when it comes to emerging and disruptive technologies, determining the likelihood of potential risks can be challenging due to the lack of historical data. In our project for the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP), we developed an agile/adaptive risk management framework to assist transportation agencies, state Departments of Transportation (DOTs), and Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs) in managing risks associated with the adoption of emerging and disruptive transportation technologies. We also used this framework to develop a risk register for four transportation technologies: Electric Vehicles, Connected Autonomous Vehicles, Mobility on Demand (MoD)/Mobility as a Service (MaaS), and Advanced Air Mobility. #EVs #emergingtechnologies #advancedairmobility #modmaas #transportationtechnologies #NCHRP #TRB #RAND

Pleased to share our recently published paper in International Journal of Transportation Science and Technology. Together with my joint PhD student Tu Pengyue (from Tongji University and on exchange in my group at NUS Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering) and Prof Bai Yu from Tongji University, we developed an extended intelligent driving model for autonomous and manually driven vehicles (AVs and MVs) in a mixed traffic environment with consideration to roadside crossing. Using actual data collected from mixed AV-human driven vehicles-pedestrian data to calibrate and validate our models, we showed that discreet AVs can greatly avoid hard braking and slightly improve passing speed compared with MVs, while competitive AVs can maximize traffic efficiency but deteriorate driving smoothness and comfort. #autonomousvehicle #drivingmodel #AVinfrastructure Link to paper (open access):

Our Dutch member, Rijkswaterstaat is organising a webinar on the impact of radar reflections in tunnels on vehicle safety. 🚨 After numerous reports of false braking events in a specific tunnel, our colleagues in the Netherlands launched an investigation to uncover the causes and find solutions. The findings will be presented in this webinar. Let's dive into how tunnel design influences radar reflections and their effect on systems like autonomous emergency breaking, adaptive cruise control, and others. 🚗 📅 Date and time: Friday 8 November at 11.00 CET 🔗 CEDR members can find the registration page here: https://shorturl.at/VebNG Jan van Hattem #Rijkswaterstaat #Webinar #RadarReflections #TunnelDesign #AutonomousDriving

LEITNER ConnX - e-mobility solution for urban areas LEITNER The urban mobility revolution is moving closer: ConnX, LEITNER’s new intermodal mobility system, is soon to be launched on the market in 2025, after successfully passing all tests. The centrepiece of the new ConnX solution - derived from the English word connect - is a ropeway, whose cabin is transferred over to an autonomous electric vehicle when it enters the station, which then continues its journey at street level. The system offers two main advantages in an urban context: firstly, topographical or structural obstacles can be overcome more easily with a ropeway solution, and secondly, the intermodal "double solution" is an important alternative for all those areas where a continuous ropeway variant is not feasible for various reasons. https://lnkd.in/g6mgxaRM

Are you a researcher working on connected and automated vehicle technologies? Get a preview of our journal's newest issue below to stay up to date on the latest developments in the field! The SAE International Journal of Connected and Automated Vehicles—co-led by Editors-in-Chief, Daniel Watzenig and Terry Fruehling—furthers the state of the art of engineering research by promoting high-quality theoretical and applied investigations in the arena of connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) in on-road, off-road, and aerial operational environments. The journal seeks to further these goals by publishing peer-reviewed scientific articles that showcase strong theoretical and empirical contributions and findings to the body of engineering knowledge surrounding various facets of the lifecycle treatment (design, modeling, controlling, testing, demonstration, and experimentation) of connected and automated vehicles with an emphasis on the system perspective. The latest issue includes eight articles on topics like predictive strategies for traffic control, vehicle safety functions, vehicle platooning, and pedestrian behavior prediction, and more! Also included is a #openaccess article by researchers from Theresianische Militärakademie in Austria and Charles Sturt University in Australia titled, "Conceptualizing an Urban Operations Vehicle within a Comprehensive Research and Development Program." In their article, they document the development for a concept uncrewed military vehicle for urban or subterranean operation, and define the parameters for creating a prototype vehicle of this kind. We encourage everyone to check out this latest issue below, or access the full issue on SAE Mobilus: https://sae.to/48VdT99 #AVs #autonomousvehicles #research

I want to take a moment and thank all those involved with both promoting this special issue as well as the LinkedIn community for highlighting the effort, whether it be through a "Like", a repost, etc. Moving forward, I wish to make the following request: if you or a colleague have an interest in publishing on this topic, please contact myself (Benjamin Duprey) or Lin Li ASAP so we can work with you on the submission of the article to the journal. The topic of Decision Making Under Uncertainty, in particular in the context of vehicle navigation, guidance, and control, is of strong personal interest to me and was one of many factors in our decision to promote this topic for this special issue. I also know it's an important topic for many of you, and for that reason we encourage you to share your expertise with the ground vehicle engineering community. We understand there are many journals from which to choose, and we appreciate researchers from across the globe who select SAE International as their publication medium. For those of you planning on attending SAE ComVec this September and want to discuss this in-person, please let me know. I'll be there representing IPG Automotive USA in the exhibition area as well as attending (and participating in) several technical sessions organized by the Chassis and Suspension Committee.
