Tonight we are discussing the future priorities of commercial road transport in the European Union at the IRU Manifesto Dinner in Brussels. The call for action is focused on three crucial areas: people, environment and prosperity. Some of the most pressing issues facing the sector concern the shortage of drivers, the decarbonisation of road transport and digitalisation. #CEDR #IRU #CommercialRoadTransport #People #Environment #Prosperity

About us
CEDR is the Road Directors’ platform for cooperation and promotion of improvements to the road system and its infrastructure, as an integral part of a sustainable transport system in Europe. It’s members represent their respective national road authorities or equivalents and provide support and advice on decisions concerning the road transport system that are taken at national or international level. The mission of CEDR is; • To analyse future developments of the road system and its infrastructure as part of a sustainable transport system under the environmental, economic and social aspects and identify new challenges in order to promote common strategies. • To promote international networks of personal contacts between Road Directors and their staff. • To provide a platform for understanding and responding to common problems. • To develop a strong involvement in EU developments on matters relating to the road system and its infrastructure. • To use existing representations in relevant international groups for mutual benefit. • To make use of the results of common understandings as well as research results in each member country. Our Dutch member, Rijkswaterstaat is organising a webinar on the impact of radar reflections in tunnels on vehicle safety. 🚨 After numerous reports of false braking events in a specific tunnel, our colleagues in the Netherlands launched an investigation to uncover the causes and find solutions. The findings will be presented in this webinar. Let's dive into how tunnel design influences radar reflections and their effect on systems like autonomous emergency breaking, adaptive cruise control, and others. 🚗 📅 Date and time: Friday 8 November at 11.00 CET 🔗 CEDR members can find the registration page here: https://shorturl.at/VebNG Jan van Hattem #Rijkswaterstaat #Webinar #RadarReflections #TunnelDesign #AutonomousDriving

For many years now, CEDR has required all of its contractors (and their subcontractors) to confirm their attention to our road safety requirements. Although European law does not currently allow us to impose these conditions as additional requirements for bidders, we are applying them as a condition of the way that a contractor carries out the work for us. These conditions require that; For driving ✓ Employees are recommended to receive re-training and refresher courses at regular periods and/or when changing vehicles (especially vehicles with new features). ✓ Employees receive clear (written) guidelines to actively discourage distracted driving (e.g. texting). ✓ Employees receive clear (written) guidelines to actively discourage speeding. ✓ Employees receive clear (written) guidelines to avoid driving when tired including after work. ✓ Employees receive clear (written) guidelines to avoid driving in adverse weather conditions and understand that they can cancel journeys or make other arrangements. ✓ In addition, contractors are invited to provide any details of re-training and refresher courses required of employees at regular periods and/or when changing vehicles (especially vehicles with new features). Vehicles ✓ Where applicable, all vehicles purchased or leased by the organisation shall meet at least the Euro NCAP - For Safer Cars, Vans & Trucks 5-star criteria and shall wherever possible include C-ITS Day 1/1.5 services. ✓ All vehicles used by any employees for any professional purposes, including the private vehicles of employees, are required to be maintained to manufacturers requirements and employees are instructed to make regular checks of basic features (tyres, windscreen washer etc). Planning ✓ Risk assessments ensure that all professional journeys shall be planned to give sufficient time for employees to drive within the applicable speed limits and provide adequate time for rest breaks. ✓ Measures are in place to ensure that the schedule of working shall be arranged to ensure that adequate rest breaks and sleeping times are ensured before any driving tasks. Sub-contractors ✓ Procurement practices are in place to ensure that all sub-contractors and suppliers are encouraged to follow road safety requirements. These are a small step within the limits currently available, but have created a discussion with, and within, our contractors and we continue to look at ways to encourage continual improvement within our supply chains. #VisionZero #RoadSafety Any comments and suggestions? 🛣️ Transport Infrastructure Ireland’s National Roads and Greenways Conference was last week, and we had 29 excellent speakers, from Ireland and abroad, who spoke on a variety of transport themes relevant to National Roads and Greenways. Over 350 attendees from local authorities gathered to hear about new approaches and developments in transport. Athlone proved to be a great location with its central location in the country served very well by National Road and Greenway infrastructure. 👏 We extend our sincere thanks to everyone who took the time to attend and present at the conference. It was a valuable opportunity for networking and meaningful conversations.
