The Walking and Cycling Index survey, conducted on behalf of Sustrans looks at what people think about active travel in urban areas to understand how residents travel around their cities and why. Walking is the most common mode of transport. 49% of residents walk or wheel at least 5 days a week. 15% of residents cycle at least once a week. We found residents want to walk, wheel and cycle more whilst driving less and they want more funding for walking, wheeling, cycling and public transport. 56% of people support shifting investment from road building. I'm happy to share our latest publication on the impact of São Paulo's (highly contested) cycling policy implemented in the 2010s on bicycle ridership. Camila Cunquero This is one of the few Latin American studies to estimate the causal effects of building hundreds of km of cycling routes on mode choice across different trip purposes in a city as large as São Paulo. Among the main results, we estimate a ~1.0% increase in cycling probability among 'paulistanos' highly exposed to new cycling routes. With São Paulo’s very large population, where more than 70% of trips are short (<10km), expanding cycling policies could lead to nearly 200,000 additional daily cycling trips, assuming broader coverage of new routes. I am happy to share our latest publication on the impact of São Paulo's cycling policy implemented in the 2010s on bicycle ridership. As one of the few Latin American studies that estimates the causal effects of building hundreds of km of cycling routes on mode choice across different trip purposes in a city as large as São Paulo, the research could be applied to different cities in Latin America of similar scale such as Buenos Aires, Santiago or Ciudad de México.
