During his talk yesterday at the National PTA Thought Leader Convening, the Lab's Research Manager Sam Schwamm called for three "next steps" to advance the field of digital wellbeing for youth: 1. More #research on interactive media, specifically around #AI & video games 2. New frameworks and measurements, such as considering alternatives to limiting #screentime and defining and delineating the different aspects of #socialmedia 3. Improved education and Intervention — recognizing and treating problematic use and designing relevant and appropriate guidelines The great news is that we're currently working on projects across all three of these areas!

She has vast experience in product management, CI and data analytics in the fields of mobile games and ecommerce. She has received several awards in games including Most-Valuable-Player and lifetime awards. Here is a short description of the workshop theme and topics: This particular workshop was sparked by the current "crisis" in the gaming industry, which seems to have various perspectives among different companies. This general concern has been raised by gaming companies, educational institutions, and those aspiring to enter the industry. As a result, it was deemed important to bring people together under one roof to share thoughts and seek solutions for the future. As an #interdisciplinaryresearch hub, the Games Institute seeks to advance the study, design, and purpose of interactive, immersive technologies and experiences. On April 19th, our members will be showcasing 7 research collaborations as part of our research efforts through the "Disrupting Disciplinary Divides for Digital Futures" research symposium. Dr. Eugene Kukshinov is joined by Dr. Daniel Harley and Dr. Lennart Nacke from the University of Waterloo Stratford School and Jonathan Baltrusiatis as a English PhD Candidate in the University of Waterloo Faculty of Arts. This collaborative research project examines how Social #VirtualReality (SVR) is often presented as a revolution in online communication. Social virtual reality (SVR) is often presented as a revolution in online communication that provides improved opportunities for creative, physical, and social interactions. Yet there is very little data about who is using SVR platforms (such as, #VR Chat or Rec Room), how they are using them, or even why. Current VR research is biased towards white male participants, therefore even less is known about other demographics and how their experiences differ.     Kukshinov and the interdisciplinary project team combined their expertise in #humancomputerinteraction, media psychology, critical media studies, and research-creation to better understand how diverse demographics navigate social virtual reality.     The team designed experiments that tested human experience and immersion in SVR such as the feeling of “being represented”. Participants created avatars and environments and the research team analyzed how and why users of diverse demographics customized their virtual presence in SVR. They have collected over 100 survey responses and many in-depth interviews with a diverse group of users to challenge how SVR is used for self expression and self-representation beyond the traditional white male culture.
