S&E from Campus to Career: Emma Cooper from Broadford in Clare graduated from the Bachelor of Engineering in Biomedical Engineering programme at University of Limerick in 2024. Now working with Pfizer at their Grange Castle facility as a graduate engineer, we caught up with Emma to ask about the course, her time at UL, and any advice she might have for Leaving Certificate students. "As part of my leaving certificate, I studied maths, chemistry and biology. These were subjects that kept me engaged and interested, they challenged me to learn about the world around me. Finishing school, I knew I could not pick maths or science over the other and decided Biomedical Engineering could offer me both. For me, Engineering combines scientific, mathematical and technological principles to solve problems. There are countless problems that need to be solved but the biomedical field develops technology and medicine to improve human health." I am very sensitive about the costs and values of higher education (as my salary comes from this sector and some of that income is returned to this sector). The following link is a great way to look at data associated with the field of biomedical engineering, what universities offer degrees in the field, and what kinds of professional outcomes can be expected. Georgia Tech shows up nicely in this data, but the overall degree and career also looks good! https://lnkd.in/gD2zBP28

2024 has seen a concerning trend of UK Universities proposing to close their Chemistry departments. Last week University of Reading announced a proposal to close theirs, following similar decisions by the University of Hull and Aston University. These closures will have far-reaching consequences, not only for students and employees directly impacted but also the wider scientific community and society. In a world where we're facing urgent challenges such as climate changes, sustainability and global health crises, it is essential we continue to invest in STEM education, not turn our backs on it. These closures will also diminish the UK's long-standing leadership position in scientific research and innovation. I urge university leaders and policymakers to rethink these decisions. Please sign the petition against the University of Reading Chemistry department closure below... https://chng.it/6X4cVGg8mt

Last but not least, we would like to highlight the UCA who served as Project Lead for the Fall 2024 semester, Isabelle Saint, a junior majoring in Biomedical Engineering with a concentration in Biomedical Devices and Instrumentations and on the pre-law track. 💭What is your favorite part of being a UCA?💭 "My favorite part of being a UCA is being there for students and having the opportunity to help others. I remember how tough my freshman year was due to the transition from high school to college. I enjoy assisting students wherever needed and helping pave their way to success. Seeing students proud of their work and projects makes me joyous that I could have been a support system for them as well." 💭What does your involvement on campus look like?💭 "My freshman year, I was a part of the Binghamton University Powerlifting & Weightlifting Team (BUPO) as a publicist. I was also a part of the Student Association at Binghamton University (SA), where I was part of the Financial Committee (FINCO), Elections & Judiciary Committee (ENJ), and Internal Affairs (IA); I was later elected as Vice Chair of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). I was promoted to Chairwoman of DEI in my sophomore year. Currently, I work as the President of CRU at Binghamton, a Christian organization." 💭Do you have any advice for freshmen taking their finals?💭 "This is one of the most stressful parts of your time as an undergraduate student. You are not alone in your stresses and frustration. Take time to decompress by doing something you love, whether it is cooking, going to the gym, or taking a long and well-deserved nap. Always remember you did your best this semester; your grades do not define you as a person. If you are unhappy with your scores, let it serve as a reminder that there is always room for improvement. Good luck, Bearcats! You got this!" Thank you, Isabelle, for all of your hard work this semester and for leading this team to success! Good luck to everyone on their final exams! #biomedicalengineering #bme #engineering #womeninstem #stem #prelaw #devices #binghamtonuniversity #newyork #technology #studentassociation #dei #finalexams #goodluck

New supervisor education at DTU! A new program has been developed at DTU to train employees in their role as main supervisors of PhD projects. As part of a reference group PhD Association DTU gave input and feedback to the programme developers. The new training lasts three and a half days and has a stronger focus on the well-being of PhD students. A pilot program was launched in September already, the regular program will begin next year. It includes a peer review activity, which means that if your supervisor attends the course, another participating supervisor may join one of your meetings to give your supervisor feedback on the supervision. Although priority is given to new supervisors, the modules are designed so that experienced supervisors can also benefit from the program. After completing all the modules, supervisors will receive a certificate. #PhDTU #Wellbeing #MentalHealth #Education #Research
