🔵 School Board to Adopt Alaska Native Advisory Board Seat 🔵 The FNSBSD Board of Education, in its commitment to providing an excellent and equitable education for all students, unanimously approved a policy change on Tuesday, June 4, to include an appointment of an advisory board member from the Fairbanks Native Association (FNA). “This is a historic moment for Fairbanks Native Association,” said Melissa Charlie, FNA executive director. “Our leaders, past and present, have long dreamed of having a seat on the school board. FNA will bring a unique perspective that will benefit the success of all students. We take this role very seriously and come prepared to work and advocate for excellent education for all students in this district.” The FNA member shall provide input and advise the School Board on all matters that come before the Board, including sharing their unique perspective on how matters under consideration might affect the Alaska Native community and all district students. The FNSBSD is governed by the Board consisting of seven members, each of whom is elected for a three-year term on a rotating basis. The advisory members, in addition to the Alaska Native seat, include an advisory member from each local military installation in which FNSBSD schools operate, and a member from the regional student council. The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff is a public HBCU located in Pine Bluff. Founded in 1873, the second oldest public institution in the state. UAPB is a member school of the UA System and Thurgood Marshall College Fund. UAPB was authorized in 1873 by the Reconstruction-era legislature as the Branch Normal College and opened on September 27, 1875, with Joseph Carter Corbin as principal. An HBCU, it was nominally part of the “normal” department of Arkansas Industrial University, later the UA. It was operated separately as part of a compromise to get a college for African American students, as the state maintained racial segregation well into the 20th century. It was designated as a land-grant college under the 1890 federal amendments to the Morrill Land-Grant Acts. As Congress had originally established the land grant colleges to provide education to all qualified students in a state, in 1890 it required states maintaining segregated systems to establish a separate land-grant university for African Americans as well as whites. In 1927, the school severed its ties with the UA and became Arkansas Agricultural, Mechanical & Normal College. It moved to its current campus location in 1929. In 1972, Arkansas AM&N re-joined what is now the UA System. As a full-fledged campus with graduate study departments, it gained its current name and university status in the process. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence #hbcu

Yesterday, the New York State Education Department presented a new vision for State Graduation Requirements. This November, the Department is expected to present its related state department implementation plan. Other states looking to similarly move toward modernizing graduation requirements and measures can access two reports that helped inform years of rigorous analysis and deliberation underlying NYSED's efforts. The reports, curated by the Region 2 Comprehensive Center at NYSED's request, reflect what is known about how other states approach graduation measures and requirements, including performance based assessments. Strategic Enrollment Management | Management Education Leader | Higher Education | Global Partnerships | MEd
The rapid pace of change in higher education shows no sign of slowing in 2024. Here are three topics to watch: 1. The shrinking pool of traditional-age #students continues to exacerbate budgetary and #enrollment challenges, forcing some #colleges to shed programs and cut #faculty members. 2. Big changes at the state level from a conservative-led crackdown on #diversity, #equity and #inclusion #programs has continued to pick up steam this year; #Utah recently banned most such initiatives at public colleges. 3. Pending court cases. Decisions could be handed down this year that determine the legality of race-conscious admissions at #military academies and recent regulations implemented by the #Biden administration. CSBA is asking school district and county office of education board members across the state to help increase awareness and support for Proposition 2 — the Kindergarten through Grade 12 Schools and Local Community College Public Education Facilities Modernization, Repair, and Safety Bond Act of 2024 — by adopting a board resolution in support of the bond. CSBA has developed a sample resolution, available here: https://lnkd.in/et4z9Ube If passed, Prop 2 will generate $8.5 billion to fund facilities improvements at TK-12 public schools and another $1.5 billion for facilities upgrades at the state’s community colleges. School boards are critical to this effort and resolutions are one of the best ways to help demonstrate to the public that their board of education supports Prop 2. Please submit your district or county office of education’s resolution to CSBA by Oct. 11 to advocacy@csba.org. Resolutions will be used to help demonstrate the widespread support for Proposition 2 by those in the field.

Just reviewed LEAP results of GEO’s Baton Rouge schools. Here are highlights. There are 81 EBR schools. While GEO schools are not EBR-approved schools (we are approved by the state board), we do serve EBR students. There are only 20 EBR schools who performed better than our two K-8 schools when it comes to serving Black students, putting our schools in the top 25% of all EBR schools. And that includes EBR’s many selective-enrollment magnet schools. We are open enrollment and yes, we provide transportation. When it comes to improvement from last year to this year, we are #7 and #8 out of 81 schools in EBR. We beat the state and EBR in both performance and improvement when you look at the results for our Black students. If you look at raw scores (all students), there are only 23 schools that performed better and six who improved more than ours. Pretty proud of our team and leadership in Baton Rouge.
