"...It isn’t as simple as saying, 'we need and support affordable housing in our community, so come build it.'” Our President & CEO, Jennifer (Gorsuch) Walters joins the conversation along with our partners at Integrated Services for Behavioral Health, and other #housing developers on the complexities of developing needed #affordablehousing in Central Ohio. Thank you to WOUB Public Media for shining a light on the #housingcrisis and allowing us to amplify our message.

I was walking through the city again this week, and I hate taking these photos, but it illustrates just how severe the situation is at ground zero right now. This is almost normalised in our daily life and I’m sure to many, it seems almost insurmountable, that we can get on top of it and find a better way. Of course those in the industry know rough sleeping is only the tip of the iceberg. But given how entrenched things have become by this stage, there really are only a few models that can truly break the cycle. They are supportive housing models and it’s great to see a lot more focus emerging on these models of housing and support, once again in this state. Many will know of the #YouthFoyer and #CommonGround models, as two prominent examples, backed by research and tenancy data that highlights their effectiveness. To some these programs might seem expensive on the front end, but the savings to government in health, justice and community services, is quite extraordinary. What’s more, some of the success stories include people ten years on actively back in the workforce, sustaining tenancies, paying off a mortgage, and participating in our economy. My grandad used to say, “if you find something that works son, repeat it over and over again … “ Here’s to more focus on these models, and others like them, ahead of the October State Election. #Supportive #Housing #Queensland #Homelessness #HomeMatters #BetterTogether

Minnesotans aged 18-34 are overwhelmingly concerned about their ability to own a house — which isn't surprising considering Realtor.com reports the median home price in the Twin Cities is $369,000, up 8.6% from this time just last year. "A typical young couple, with the housing stock in short supply and interest rates above 7%, would need a staggering $35,000 for a down payment on an average-priced home in a safe neighborhood. This, coupled with a monthly payment of over $2,000, is a financial burden that seems insurmountable." More poll results here: https://lnkd.in/gsTbTwV2

A recent article in Essence underscores a harsh reality: BIPOC households bear a disproportionate burden when it comes to housing costs. These financial pressures not only hinder homeownership but also perpetuate broader economic disparities. Stable housing is a foundation for health, education, and economic opportunities— we must continue to take action to ensure housing justice for all.

The latest data from the Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies shows that with the growing housing crisis (rising rents, stagnant wages, lack of affordable housing), evictions continue to rise and the US has the highest homelessness counts on record. "[This] level of cost-burdened households in 2022 had not been seen since the Great Recession in 2008, when 10 million Americans lost their homes to foreclosure." These statistics are all too real for many families in our Family Success Program. We strive to provide families with the knowledge, resources, and support to help alleviate this burden, but much work remains to be done.
