I’ve had time to reflect on my work life and the lessons that will always stick with me. There are many, but one that I’d like to share is from my first month at HappyCo.
I’d joined the company when my team was in the midst of preparing for a major release. They had been working tirelessly on a ton of features for months, and it was time to present them to our clients. This release encompassed years of promises made, endless customer conversations, scope negotiations, and whatnot. Of course, its success would also impact our partnership.
No pressure!!
The team had successfully built the features despite the many challenges they'd faced along the way.
They were now going through testing, and it was all hands on deck.
And that’s when I joined the team. 💁♀️
Expecting to spend hours getting formally onboarded at that time would be unrealistic. It was time to take off running.
Given the stress the team was going through, understandably, emotions were high.
And that’s when someone I enjoyed working with said to me:
𝐀𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐞 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭.
Why am I sharing this?
Well, that simple advice helped me look beyond the frustrations, and focus on the goal.
I let my team know that I’m here to help. I focused on the best way I could assist — testing!
Luckily, I knew the industry and had a background in QA. So I spent the next few weeks testing all the not-so-happy paths and found some critical bugs that helped tighten the product before we presented it to our clients. My way of overcoming the very first challenge I faced after joining a start-up.
When I left HappyCo, many of the kind farewell messages I received were around my initial days and how I handled the situation. The way I navigated through that period helped me gain the trust of my team. And all that testing helped me understand the complex rules in place. During this period, I also identified a few processes that could be refined, which I later on addressed with my manager.
My decision to assume good intent and act with that belief helped me shape the relationship with my team over the coming months.
