I disagree that the system is broken - in a recent podcast on We Can Do Hard Things by Glennon Doyle, Amanda Doyle and Abby Wombach made a beautiful and precise observation along the lines of “how can something be broken if the system was non-existent to begin with? If the system is broken then it implies the system was perfect and if we fix it, it will be perfect again” Leadership crisis exists from every home in the world to every politician that says “they represent our interests”. Leadership crisis exists because we value money over human lives and because the few that hold power have no leadership experience but have immense experience in exploitation. So many healthcare executives, chief medical officers for the state and govenrment don’t even have a basic qualifications to know how to run healthcare as a business. Where there is money there is business. Even here in Australia - so many of the CEO’s, CMO’s and hospital administrators or team managers have no experience in running a business but are chosen: based on how they perform in interviews which are anyway flawed and whom they know and most importantly whether they are going to be compliant and complacent with the leaders. I propose every Chief of staff for each department should be mandated to do a leadership and management course which includes a capstone to demonstrate their capability and competency.
For those of you who have been following my musings for awhile, you know that I have a deep conviction that our broken healthcare system is the result of a leadership crisis in American healthcare. We are saddled with inauthenticity and poor execution and incomplete consideration of our tradeoffs. We have undiscussed ethical challenges in every sector of healthcare. We have confused financial success with virtue. If you were building an elite academy with the purpose of training a next-generation of principled healthcare leaders, what skillsets and topics would you include in the curriculum? What experiences would you require? What would be the admission criteria?

5️⃣ Executive Leadership Insights for Leaders of Every Level ... Yesterday, Mike Uchrin, CEO & Co-Founder of Monogram Health and Council Fellows 2016 alumnus, convened with healthcare leaders to share his insights on leadership, the unique and special business mentality in Nashville, how overcoming challenges can be the best for driving perspective and much more. 5 Key Leadership Insights: 1️⃣ Experience makes a bigger impact than the positions or titles you hold. Look for a role where you will garner the most experience - experience will propel your career. 2️⃣ The greatest learning happens when things don't go right - but don't allow those moments to define you. That is when you are able to create success, learn, and leverage that perspective as you move forward to grow and mature as a leader. 3️⃣ Be comfortable with who you are, whatever that means for you - understand it and embrace it. 4️⃣ Be deliberate about the culture you want to set and work on it daily. 5️⃣ When it comes to mentors, it is not necessarily singular- it is multiple different experiences. An increasing number of physicians aspire to transition to executive positions to drive positive change within our healthcare system and enhance the community impact of health organizations. Yet, there is a significant gap in essential education, mentorship, and recruitment opportunities for these physician leaders. With growing coverage of this trend by various outlets, it is an opportune moment to reconsider how we prepare our future physicians and for organizations to reassess their leadership development initiatives. #physicianleadership #executiveleadership #medicaleducation #managingchange
