ESG and Real Estate Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) is more than simply a catchphrase. Initially, ESG was often seen as a marketing tool rather than a mandate. However, with today's evolving laws and the moves by governments and corporations to meet specific standards for environmental, social, and governance activities, commercial real estate has had to move ESG from being a nice idea to a standard operational practice. In the world of commercial real estate investment, ESG has become mandatory. Corporations moving into commercial buildings have their own ESG standards, and if your building does not meet those standards, you're likely to lose potential clients. For anyone investing in commercial real estate, ESG is now an essential consideration. If your property does not meet some level of ESG standards, you may find it difficult to sell or lease at the prices you want. While there has been some pushback against ESG in the United States, the rest of the world accepts it as the new way of doing business. ESG is a positive for business, making buildings more efficient, organizations more viable, and providing guidance on keeping operations strong.
