This week’s plenary session of European Parliament in Strasbourg will decide the schedule of the hearings for the Commissioners-designate that shall form the new College heading the European Commission. In preparation of the in-person vetting between 4 and 12 November 2024, we recall that #semiconductors are the foundation of all modern electronic devices, hence the key enablers of the digital and green transitions. The EU Chips Act has been an important step in strengthening the EU’s semiconductor ecosystem. Now, ESIA is laying out its policy recommendations for the 2024-2029 political mandate 📘 The overarching goal is to further boost the semiconductor industry in Europe. This must be underpinned by a holistic industrial strategy 🏭 including policies for research 👨🏻🔬👩🏽🔬, innovation 💡, manufacturing ⚙️, trade 🌐, sustainability ♻️, and a skilled workforce 🦾 Read more in the first comment.

Three new calls are being launched by Chips Joint Undertaking with a total budget of €216 M. These calls refer to the activities of the Chips JU that are not directly linked to the #Chips for #Europe initiative (ex. Key Digital Technologies JU), with resources pooled from the Horizon Europe programme. The first call for Innovation Actions (IA) and the second call for Research and Innovation Actions (RIA) will be run in two phases, with the deadline for project outlines set on 14 May and full project proposals due by 17 September. The third call includes one topic for RIA and will be implemented as a one-phase call without national contribution but in cooperation with #SouthKorea. The deadline for the full project proposal is 14 May.

This event was a great platform to release our latest white paper that captures the lessons learned from business, techno-economics, and governance perspectives of 5G-Based Teleoperation: 𝐖𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐧 𝐆𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐬  as part of the 𝟓𝐆-𝐁𝐥𝐮𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐭 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 outcomes. Our team's contribution focused on the techno-economic assessment, with some key findings that we would like to share: 💡 Initial Deployment: Start TO services in a limited area with short public road trips, integrating many use cases for cost-sharing and optimal operator use. 💡 5G Network Deployment: 5G coverage on-demand connectivity option is cost-effective for limited areas, while 5G network slicing is best for broader regions. 💡 Cost Reduction: Adjusting uplink capacity requirements can cut TCO by 26%-40%. Smart deployment of small cells enhances capacity at reasonable costs. 💡 Cost-Saving Strategies: Passive and active network sharing can significantly reduce overall deployment costs. #StrongerTogether – 31 regions, 13 countries, a powerful #Alliance to support the #EUChipsAct The 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗦𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗔𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 (ESRA), established in September 2023, held its first General Assembly in Dresden, Germany this week. #ESRA unites the expertise of regions, scientific communities, and local administrations to support #microelectronics in #Europe and enhance technological sovereignty. Around 100 participants from the member regions gathered to discuss key industry topics, welcome the newest member, Norte region (Portugal), and collectively drive forward the European #semiconductor industry. One concrete result of the meeting was the publication of ESRA’s position paper outlining strategies to strengthen Europe’s semiconductor ecosystem.
