After reading this article from a tragedy that occurred in Maine back in 2006, it was deeply disturbing to know that nothing has really changed when it comes to the patient rights advocates. How can anyone justify this? Individuals who are very sick and vulnerable are coached what to say despite what is in their best interest to achieve meaningful recovery. Disability rights attorneys, patients rights advocates and peers should all be required to receive education on what it means to have psychosis and anosognosia. We continue to see similar tragedies happen throughout the country. One’s right to medically necessary care that would give those with no-fault brain disorders a chance at a meaningful recovery is a right to protect. These groups are protecting the wrong rights and contributing to homelessness, incarceration and death. I wonder if these groups realize the harm that is often done in cases like this? #shatteringsilence #inspiringchange
We are voices for the 14.2 milion adults and 8 million children living and dying far too young with serious brain disorders
"At a treatment meeting on April 6, 2006, the records showed, patient advocates were coaching Will on how to answer questions aimed at determining whether he should be allowed to go into the community on short-term passes. "They want to see that you can play nicely in the community. Just say yes," one advocate told Will, according to notes of the meeting." Patient Advocates should be required to learn about psychosis and anosognosia. This tragedy occurred back in 2006 - sadly similar tragedies continue to happen in the state of Maine despite having a Progressive Treatment Program Law (Maine's version of AOT) on the books for 22 years. Governor Janet Mills where is the accountability by the state of Maine not only to protect the safety of those in the community but to allow individuals living with a severe mental illness to have a chance at a meaningful recovery? Joe Bruce was right, "It shouldn't take killing your mom to get proper treatment". #shatteringsilence #inspiringchange https://lnkd.in/eUYjtfKn
